So, we are off camping for 4-5 days at some point during the last 2 Weeks in August. We live in the north east. I prefer back to basics campsites where you can have fires and don't care about many facilities. Dh prefers hotels, or at least decent facilities.

Having had a chat between us and our 2 sons we have the following wishlist:

Campfire
Water - lake /river
Ideal location would be near / in Woods and /or mountains
Good cycling nearby, preferably to include hills / mountains
Not Scotland /Northumberland / Cornwall, and ideally within 4-5 hours max
Pub within walking distance
quiet campsite
Kids playground desirable but not essential.

Help?

Me, I'd be happy with number 1 but give us your best shot!

Where are you Yellow? Would Yorkshire Dales be any good? Or North York Moors?

Can recommend Aysgarth - actually recommended to us originally by another MNetter and Masons

Have not yet been to Masons, but am dying to try it out.

This is a favorite of ours YellowDinosaur:

Very small site, right in the centre of Thornton le Dale, so an easy walk to the pubs. No playground onsite but there is a decent one across the main road. Mountain biking straight from the site to Dalby Forest (all off road so good for the kids).

All those suggestions look fab thanks ladies.

Masons was actually one I'd thought of - I haven't been there either but it seemed to tick all boxes.

TheRealMbj i'm in Newcastle so Yorkshire pretty ideal. We have family in Herefordshire and Hertfordshire so could break journeys further south with either of them too, although much further on wouldn't be great (hence not Cornwall) and don't want to be too close to home (hence not Northumberland). dh is a midges magnet too, hence not Scotland!

But we're used to travelling so any of those suggested are definitely contenders and very helpful food for thought - thanks! Appreciating that as a family we are pretty high maintenance with our wish list!

Masons is great, we went last year. We went www.flowerofmay.com/rosedale-park.html here, to Rosedale Abbey at the weekend and that was another good site.

How about Robin Hoods Bay? Hooks House Farm always gets good reviews although we went to Middlewood Farm a few years ago.

Ah, sorry, didn't notice the campfires on the wish list! Fisherground in the Lakes www.fishergroundcampsite.co.uk/?
