Anyone watch 'Britain goes camping'?

(23 Posts)

It was on BBC 4 last night.

Presumably it will be on Iplayer.

I had no idea DH's family weren't the only nutters who took two weeks' worth of spam away with them in a trailer.

OOOOH will look that up ta (if we ever locate that bloody remote control hmm- actually we can watch via Wii so yes, can find it anyway)

2 weeks worth pf spam? Niiiiiiiice!

Thanks for that - watching on iplayer now!

DH and I stayed up late watching Nuts in May - that might be on too. They are having a big 'Great Outdoors' week.

I couldn't believe the glamping "tent". A tent, IMHO, does not have a shower or a flushing toilet!

I loved the little cupboard bed in it.

It did seem, though, that they would have been better staying in a log cabin with those lovely things inside - it did seem a bit odd for a tent.

Rather belatedly I noticed that behind the bloke from Liverpool who was saying that his family used to drive 2000 miles to the south of France every year, there was a REALLY nice tent. Looked like a kind of cross between a bell tent and something Outwell might produce in their 50% More Expensive designer range. If anyone can identify it do let me know what it was! (If I see anyone with one on our campsite in France next week I'll be envy)

I loved the cupboard bed grin but as you say I would have thought they'd be better suited to a log cabin or a little cottage.

It was lovely - brought back lots of happy childhood memories and all the reasons why we camp now.

I especially liked the great grandad

Yes - that guy was amazing - wasn't he in his eighties and still camping with his family?

I wish my dad would come camping with the dc - he'd love it.

oooh Orlando, that tent you mention is nice. I have used my detective skills and identified it..it is made by Vaude, and is the Badawi tent.

here

Its £500 and they do a cotton version for £600.

bit expensive but nice!

I liked the guy who said that complaining about rain when you're camping is like complaining about traffic when you're driving through London - struck a chord after a very wet weekend in Snowdonia!

Yup - it rained every day on our holiday but we had a great time. More dolphins came out when the weather was bad too, for some reason.

SanctiMoanyArse Wed 21-Jul-10 12:18:15

Oh teh Badawi is nice, tehre's a tent display in Somerset that often has it but er rejected it as it has no side skirt (sadly)

Wow- excellent detective work, Lovesdogsandcats! Thanks so much for finding that out and posting the link. You've kind of put my mind at rest now as it wouldn't really be big enough for us I don't think, so if I do happen to see one in Normandy I won't have to walk past and peer in 27 times a day. I like the colour though - much brighter and more coordinated with my camping accessories than our dark blue Vango...

Lovesdogsandcats Wed 21-Jul-10 15:27:58

Ok, shall I not tell you about the Badawi long, which sleeps 6? ;)

one here for £400 but doesn't really appeal to me. I like my SIG!

I think the girl talking about the Spam was Emma Kennedy who wrote "The Tent, the Bucket and Me" a very funny memoir about her family's disastrous cammping holidays in the seventies. I was crying with laughter when I read it.

Orlando, that is my tent with my husband in the foreground talking about french camping trips circa 1978. The tent is a Badawi II with an extra room as we have three children to house. It was expensive, but worth every penny, cool in the morning and warm at night with a very large living area. More stuff about it on our blog cath and math camping dot com, if you're interested in camping stuff.

You're allowed to link it properly!

That's a gorgeous tent. Do you have the technical cotton one?

Soandso, now I feel REALLY RUDE for dismissing your lovely husband so summarily and admiring your tent!! (Or would it have been ruder to admire your husband? I'm all confused now!) But anyway, I did love his story about driving from Liverpool to South of France - we're in Cheshire and feeling weary at the thought of heading to Normandy, so it made me feel both wussy and inspired!

And thanks for directing us to the blog (and the link, ivykaty) Looks fab - am off for a read now!

Thank you, sorry, cathandmathcamping .com
I do not ave a technical cotton one, probably it is a bit heavier than the nylon one we have.
