Calorie-counting

MFP - first weeks weight loss

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 11/11/2014 10:23

I started using MFP 8 days ago and have lost 5lb which seems an awful lot to me. When I set up MFP I set the desired weight loss at 1lb per week and wanted to lose half a stone in total (or at most up to 10lb).
Most days I was within 100 calories of the recommended 1280cal (with the exception of day 1 when I was 400 calories under due to an intensive gym workout and day 5 when I had a blow out and consumed 1900 net calories).
I expected to lose 1-2lb so far but have lost 5lb. Is this just because my body is adjusting to the new eating regime and it will therefore level out soon? Or do I need to eat more net calories in order to lose weight more slowly and therefore be more likely to keep it off?
Does MFP set the calorie levels too low?

Sounds ideal to me what is 'MFP'?

When you first start any calorie restriction, I find you lose alot in the first week. It settles down after that.

flowercat it is my fitness pal. An app which counts net calories (calories eaten less exercise). I just scan all the bar codes of everything I eat and most things are already stored in the app database so it automatically calculates the calories.

Thanks hedwig

It does settle down. I'm 8 weeks in and seem to have stopped losing, I'm going to have to increase the exercise I guess.

It's probably partly water. You may find the scales don't show any loss this week, or even a gain of 1-2 lb. just remember it's unlikely that 5lb was fat and it was probably more like 2lb fat so it may balance out this week.
Or you could just have been lucky!

It was another loss of 2lb this week (well in 5 days). I have had to up my calorie intake to 1500 a day as I was getting terrible dizzy spells so I would expect my weight loss to slow right down now. I would be happy with 1lb per week loss as I don't need to lose lots of weight. 1200 calories did seem very low considering what I usually eat so hopefully 1500 is easier to stick to.

Hi all! Can I join you on the quest of trying to lose weight using mfp?

I've used it before and managed to lose just over a stone but need to find the motivation to input everything I eat (and obviously stay within the calorie limit).

I've started it as of today and (if ok with you) we could input our progress onto your thread, as support?

Yes, the more the merrier, everybody is welcome and it is always good encouragement to stick with it when you are sharing your progress with other people. I'm definitely feeling better with the 1500 calories a day rather than the 1200.
I went to the cinema with the kids last night and didn't even want any of the sweets or popcorn, a first for me, as I usually have a very sweet tooth. The less sugar I eat the easier it becomes to not want any sugary foods at all.

Hi all I'm 2 weeks in using MFP and have lost 7lb in total Grin

4lb in the first week.

I've got 2 1/2 stone to lose all together so I was expecting to lose a larger amount in the first week.

Feeling positive about it and have eaten well even though my calorie limit is 1200. I've even had Chinese, wine and a huge Sunday dinner yesterday. Smile

Good luck to everyone else.

I started just over a week ago. I lost 6 lbs in the first week. I'm 5 foot 4inches and was 10 stone 12 lbs.
First target is to get under 10 stone then I'm going to decide if I want to lose more. 9 stone 4 lbs is my favourite weight I've ever been but I also like cake and wine so once I'm a healthy weight I decide. Grin

Sulking. Sad I've been religiously sticking to my (1200) calories each day, have upped my steps using Pacer (makes me want to get to 10,000 every day) and haven't touched alcohol since 5th January. I have put 1lb on!!! If someone else had told me that, I would assume they're cheating. I can only think I must be sleep eating Grin

I would love to join you all but really need to find what works for me.

How is everyone doing? I lost 2lbs this week so heading in the right direction. I have an apple strudel in the freezer and could happily eat the whole thing. Luckily I can't be bothered to cook it so should be safe.

Hi, can I join the thread? Started back on mfp last week, on 1200 a day, managing to stick more or less to that. So far I've lost 4 lbs, (2 lbs each week) I want to lose around a stone. I'm only weighing once a week on a Saturday morning as I found if I weighed daily it would be up and down and I'd get fed up. I've also been taking a snack box to work for the afternoon slump, has some chopped up mango, pineapple, strawberries and grapes. Plus 1 caramel snack a jack for something sweet with a cuppa. It seems to be working!

KentonArcher

1200kcal is really low, I'm not surprised you've gained weight if you have upped your activity on so little food! Are you eating back your exercise calories? If you are sticking to 1200 then your net calories shouldn't be below that Smile
