Is there already a thread about this?
Have a funny feeling I'm doing something next Friday, but can't think what!
What are we going to ask?

i borrowed the book from the library, thinking about buying it, is the postal strike still happening, or will it get here in time for me to read?

now i need to think of some intelligent questions - can't just ask about the stretchy-nippled woman feeding her baby in a sling on her back!!

I am a bit start struck too.

I actually think her book is the most political book I have ever read. Who would have thought that something as simple as feeding a baby could be such an extreme topic?

I didn't know about this webchat, will definitely be having a look. To anyone who's not read it - read it! It's one of the most interesting books I've ever read, I read it twice! Fascinating stuff, and a lot of really upsetting stories and stuff to make the blood boil.

It would be interesting to ask Gabrielle Palmer how she thinks bf rates can be raied in the West, as the 'breast is best' thing just doesn't seem to do it.

I'm with GreenMonkies, very star struck. I stupidly missed hearing her speak at a conference last summer as I had my head up my bum hadn't read the book yet, gutting. I will definately think of something Intelligent and Stimulating to ask.

was hoping to use this thread for discussion to avoid cluttering the other one. Hope someone joins me or it's going to be quite one sided!

I noticed that GP says the artifically fed infant of a millionaire will be worse off from a health pov than the exclusively bf infant of a woman living in poverty. Later on she provides a reference which I haven;t looked at yet. Assuming that's the case then it's a fairly conclusive answer to the "but it's middle class mums that breastfeed" line. Any thoughts on that?

I'm about to go out, but I'll happily chat later. What do you want to discuss?

I was looking at my 'reasons to be proud' poster yesterday (it's on the fridge for encouragement) and reflecting on this:

Just how angry would it make people if it was phrased in the opposite way.

Risks of artificial feeding
i.e.

1 Day:

  • For baby - no natural immunity from infection provided.
  • For mother - does not help womb to contract to normal size.

    2-3 Days:

  • For baby - sticky black meconium is cleared less readily from baby?s bowel.
  • For mother - will have hot, swollen breasts when milk comes in.

    1 Week:

  • For baby - transition to world outside womb is not eased.
  • For mother - possibly sharing feeding with others, though it may mean more rest , could reduce time to sit or lie down and for you to get to know each other.

    2 weeks:

  • For baby - food & drink not always ready at the right temperature, and does not adapt to the baby?s needs.
  • For mother - night feeds can result in wakefulness, as you don't get the oxytocin to help you back to sleep.

    4 weeks:

  • For premature babies - higher risk factors for heart disease in later life.
  • For mother - more time spent sterilising and making up bottles.

    6 weeks:

  • For baby - twice the risk of chest infections now and up to 7 years old.
  • For mother: You cannot go out and about without bottle feeding equipment.

    2 months:

  • For baby - higher risk of food allergy at 3 years old.
  • For mother - higher risk of ovarian cancer in later life.

    3 months:

  • For baby - five times more likely to get diarrhoea now and a higher risk for the whole year.
  • For mother - more visits to gp as baby is more often ill.

I know this would be unpopular - but that doesn't make it any less true...

really pleased I saw GP earlier this year. Still gives me something to smile about while I have the pig flu. I can still self certify myself off work on Friday but feel like I ought to go in regardless and tackle the mess that will be my desk and classroom.

what should I do.

stay off and read the webchat?

or go to work and save the school the supply money slave away.

what would you do?

what would GP do?

Well actually I'd go to work, sorry

What does anyone think about the millionaire's child thing?

If I go to work I can read the first half of the webchat in peace as it is part of the lunch break.
