Infant feeding

baby constipated... different formula?

Now ds is only getting 2 breastfeeds a day he is getting a bit constipated.
He is on SMA gold, which wasn't a problem when he was having about 50% breastmilk and 50% formula.
Now he goes all red and strains and cries a lot when trying to do a poo, and all he manages is a little tiny bit that is really solid.
I have been giving him water, but he tends to sick it up quite often, so it doesn't work that well!

I think I need to change formula... but don't know which to try!
any suggestions?

Aptamil seemed good when I used it with dd....

Another vote for Aptamil. We are using it for ds2 and his tummy has always seemed very settled. Aptamil gives them nice soft stools a bit like b/f baby stools.

My doctoer told me to give water between feeds. I am mixed feeding by the way. But will try aptamil, currently using SMA for hungrier babies.

DD is another Aptimil baby. I think it is the probiotics in the formula that makes pooh softer more like breastfed poohs IYSWIM. Nearly everyone I know uses Aptimil - the HVs think that it is the best! HTH

def aptamil. i tried others with my ds and we had servere trouble with constipation, down the hospitol loads lactulos suppositries etc, it was really nasty. i put him on to aptamil and within a couple of weeks we weaned him off the lactulose bit by bit and he was going unaided.
I had a friend who had to takes her baby off aptamil cos he was getting diarrohia so that was when i though to put him on it.

DS found SMA gold really constipating. I thought it was because he wasn't getting enough to drink but as soon as we switched formula to Hipp Organic everything seems to flow nicely!

Hi Starlover, We'd heard SMA could cause constipation before we started on formula so avoided it. We use Cow and Gate, have tried Aptimil too but dd was a bit sicky on it but I know a lot of people use it and it works really well.

my ds seems to be having probs now on more formula- sma- think will try aptamil... does it matter if you just swap ?

toria, don't think it matters too much if you swap.

just tried ds on cow and gate but he seemed to be being sick a lot more.
now have aptamil which seems ok... but we haven't had a poo yet!

i have to say, that aptamil actually tastes more like breast milk than SMA or cow and gate!

In our case, aptamil was the best with difference it also improved his eczema a little bit and the screaming when pooing disapeared ... until we introduced cows milk. Wen't back to Aptamil for a further year and now he is fine.

Bare in mind that changes won't take place immediatly. Be patient and give this formula a couple of days.

There's a lot home remedies actually worked for me. My DS now can settle her bowel with ease but apparently I suggested these remedies for my friend which her DD also had constipation problems but somehow it didn’t work out for her. So I think different toddlers have different digestive system which some way dont seem to solve their constipation problems. But somehow Mamil Dumex is quite a good solution for toddlers constipation problem as well because me and my that friend used and it actually help in constipation child treatment. Maybe u guys can try it which Mamil Dumex is a milk powder brands which helps in preventing child constipation in long run for all kinds of toddlers.

whenever i buy a milk formula i will always remember about the scandal that happened in china by Fontera milk powder
the milk powder was tainted and babies just fell very ill and if u don't want ur child to grow up having health issues it is advisable to get a good milk formulas and branded ones you definitely dont want to regret the decision
for me if possible i let my child avoid milk formulas because it is heathy and if my son did not drink enough water then here comes the constipation problems

There are some unnecessary worries in the two comments made recently. Toddlers don't need special milk, they can have whole cow's milk from 12 months (or goats milk, or a suitable whole milk alternative like an unsweetened fortified oat milk) - there's no need to recommend a specific brand of toddler milk.

All milks for babies and toddlers in the UK will be "good" and there's no such thing as an unbranded (legal) infant formula in the UK.

I think rather than just focusing on which milk formula to feed ur LO why not try more organic ways. Like maybe increasing the water consumption for LO. Also can try what i always do, feeding prunes and freshly squeezed fruit juice. This may help.

I've tried Mamil, Friso even Sustagen. All also seems okay but i would definitely prefer Mamil. Not sure why but i feel my DS less heaty when taking Mamil la. Over all these three brand seems alright.

Anyone know is Mamil expensive??? if compare to other milk powder brand in the market now?? Bcos i'm having rather a tight budget family right now, only my husband working to support me and two kids.

None of these are UK brands.

In the UK, formula is all safe and all of the same quality.

It would be a lot of writing, but basically, I found this article helpful:

Some good advice there...
