Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

and thanks very much for your help
Thanks tiktok, good to know there is no magical position or something that I should be doing! you'd think I'd remember this from last time but I don't...

Well, good to know I can relax on the back patting.

I've got a sling so will make more use of it.

Soon i'll be back for tips on how to make the awake time DAYTIME and the sleepy time NIGHTTIME but i guess it's too soon...

All this sounds really normal and healthy, christiana

You do not need to pat a baby on the back, especially not for ages. This is just something we do 'cos we have always done it! There is no real physiological effect - putting a baby upright can sometimes coincide with a burp but it could be coincidence

It sounds like your baby manages to cope well with her burps and farts and can safely 'permitted' to do this. Sleeping on you is normal and healthy and having your hands free to get on with other things is made easier with some sort of sling.
Hi, DD2 is 13 days old. She is feeding well and regained her birth weight after one week.

However, she has lots of explosive farts that are not that comfortable for her obviously,a nd it takes her a while to work through them. I am wondering what could cause it. She sometimes burps halfway through a feed, but doesn't really burp if I pat her back. Even if I do it for ages. She hates being laid flat, and often burps after a nappy change when she's getting a bit distressed and a lift her up.

So she's happiest snoozing ON me, which is OK except I have another DD age 3 to look after and it would be much better if she could burp more successfully so I could let her rest properly in her moses basket between feeds and cuddles and changes?

Could I have positioned her badly at boob? I think I can hear her swallowing air sometimes.

Does anyone have any tips or advice?

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
