Infant feeding

Now DD is weaned does it matter much if I swap to a different formula?

I am currently weaning dd and am thinking about changing the formula she drinks.

I have hesitated before not wanting to upset her digestive system but Im thinking that now allsorts of different things are going in does it really matter if she gets a slightly different milk.

I am embarrased to admit its a financial motivation - she is on aptamil 1st which is one of the most expensive. I was thinking of changing to a slightly cheaper one (they are all much of a muchness yeah?) or going on to follow on so I can at least earn some boots points on it to use on other things we need.

I know follow on isnt necessary, but is it actually harmful?

of course it is not harmful !! make sre you choose a follow on milk and not a hungrier baby milk as those are heavier , take longer to digest and can give your baby a tummy ache

I would try it and see - try one that does those little packs of one feed, then you can see how she does with it.

follow on milk is not necessary at all no - just a ploy by the formula companies to get round the ban on formula advertising.

Follow on is a waste of time

Swapping formula isn't going to cause a problem. I swapped formula for my DS at 6 weeks and he was fine. Avoid SMA though - I had major probs with it (but obv is personal choice and some people like it)

lulumama - but follow on is made with the same protein formulation as 'hungrier baby milk'...ie casein-dominant.

Is follow on like hungrier baby milk tiktok? I will stay well clear if that is the case as DD isnt the greatest milk drinker so I dont want to do anything to inhibit that.

I know that follow on is a waste of time really BUT was thinking if it is exactly the same I might as well get some financial benefits from buying it!

Also, hipp organic is sooo much cheaper - 4.98 instead of 7.98 - we are so skint this is very tempting but obviously dont want to mess around with her as she is settled.

I've changed ds's formula twice. No problems what so ever

You can change formula at any time, I switched from aptamil to hipp, and dd2 was fine on it (although she had a bit of constipation whilst settling into it, a few days and she was fine).

The follow on formula has more iron in it (which can also cause constipation). I would stick to Hipp first milk, because maybe then the change wouldn't be too great.

Follow on is not the same as hungrier baby milk. It has more iron in it. It has the same protein formulation, though, as I say.

Ah, sorry for hijack but have just thought of a related question. I'm about to start weaning dd next week. At the moment she is on Aptamil hungry. Once she has established a bit of solid eating, do I need to move her off hungry and onto First or Follow on? Never thought of that..

I kept ds on hungry milk till he was about 9 months old and then switched from aptamil hungry milk to cow and gate follow on milk as it was much cheaper. I did try to switch to follow on at around 6 months but ds got unsettled so I switched back to hungry milk. Hungry milk would still be ok to use alongside weaning but you have the other options open to you too.
