Infant feeding

if you express milk & put it straight in a sterile bottle and then go out, how long will it last?

is it ok to do this? Or does it need to be chilled in fridge first, taken out in a insulated bottle thingy and then warmed up??

How long do you need it to last?

If it is for use the same night, there is no need to put it in the fridge.

I'm pretty sure it's good for about 6 hours at room temperature.

Hi,

Yes it's fine to do this. I exclusively expressed for 6 months, partly for another month. I used to carry my bottles around in an insulated pouch in the side of the change bag - and only usually kept an ice pack if I was going to be out for the whole day.

There are lots of leaflets and websites about EBM storage that give incorrect advice based on formula. Breast milk in fact can keep for days (up to 8 days apparently) in the fridge, although the nutritional values will go down as with anything else. If the EBM smells/tastes ok then it probably is. You don't need to tip your hard-earned EBM down the sink unless it smells bad (unmistakeable) or tastes sour. If you feed EBM from a bottle and the baby decides they're not hungry halfway through, you can keep it till the next feed (in the fridge if it will be a while). Most leaflets will say discard it.

Sorry I'll be quiet now. I know you didn't ask for all that info but it might be useful to someone I hope!

Just realised LackaDAISYcal that your last link was to Kellymom which has all of the above info, should have checked it first I suppose!

Oh well, for the lazier MNers around who can't be bothered to click on a link...!

YES! It's been helpful to me! I've wasted loads because I didn't know that, so thanks - my baby will get more breastmilk in her now so that's got to be a good thing.
