Infant feeding

Ds2 14 months biting me at the end of feeds when he's asleep

Is there anything I can do? I can't even say stop or no to him as he's doing it in his sleep! I was dosing this morning whilst feeding him (5am ish) and when he's done he seems to just clamp down. It really hurt and I even said ouch!

It isn't just a quick nip either he really clamps down and it takes a good few seconds to get my nipple out of his mouth. It's very sore now when he feeds.

Its making me apprehensive about feeding him to be honest. He never does it anymore while he's awake, only sleeping. I've tried detatching him towards the end of the feed when he's sucking more for comfort but he wakes up and screams and goes red and rigid until I let him feed again.

Don't let him go to sleep. Tickle his feet if he nods off, or blow in his face.

And as for the comfort sucking and screaming when removed from the breast - babies are very very quick learners and he has probably learned that yelling gets him the dummy (that's you btw!) back sharpish.

So if you've ruled out pain and hunger etc and are sure he's having what is basically a tantrum , then had you thought about letting him cry, cuddling and soothing him, but NOT offering the breast back. You can be in control of this.

I have scars on my nipples because ds1 cut his first 2 teeth on them. It hurts like feck! He used to suckle me like a dummy and I never put him down! Ds2 got put bloody down, I can tell you!
