Infant feeding

Reflux in 13 week old? Should I see GP or will it resolve itself?

DS is just over 13 weeks old, happy (most of the time), developing well. Weight gain OK.
But the last couple of weeks I have been struggling a bit feeding him especially on my left boob, he either won't latch on or he does, sucks a few times then screams. I then swap him onto the right and latches on and feeds fine.
He is not like this all the time, it tends to be during the day. Sometimes he does this whole latch-suck-scream on both boobs, I persist as he is giving me the signs he is hungry, but the constant pulling off makes my nipples sore! I have to calm him down, check for wind, dirty nappies before trying again.
At night I feed him on the left, he feeds and feeds and feeds, then comes off, goes on and off again. Then I wind him and offer other boob which he'll take and again I feed him and when he pulls himself off offer again so I know he has had enough as he won't latch on again.
He's feeding every 2-3 hours all day all night. He possets occasionally, not as much as he used to but he can be sick a up to couple of hours after a feed, sometimes quite a lot.
Is the vomiting and the fussiness at the breast a possible sign of reflux? A friend has suggested it might be but thought I would ask here.
Thanks for reading my rather long post! Hopefully someone has had a similar experience and can advise me

Hello Bouncingturtle, he's doing similar things to my ds who is 10 weeks (well, was doing..) and it was oversupply and a fast letdown theat was causing the problem. Kellymom has loads of info about oversupply/fast letdown. THe symptoms are very similar to reflux, and in fact oversupply can cause reflux, as tiktok told me when I posted about the problem I was having. I started to block-feed (feeding only from one boob for a number of hours regardless of how may feeds that was) and adopting different feeding positions and there has been an improvement although my ds is very prone to trapped wind, I think because of his rubbish latch.

If it is straightforward reflux I would definately get him down to the gp because it can cause them a lot of pain (think horrible acid burning of heartburn you might have had yourself) and there are some really good medications that can help - although I wouldn't recommend gaviscon, my dd had relfux and was given, firstly, gaviscon which did nowt but make her constipated!!

Thanks for that. DS doesn't seem to be in pain, so it could be the over supply/fast let down. His crying is more a frustrated/angry cry than an in-pain cry.
When you block fed from one breast, was it the one you had the problem with? Did you get engorged on the one you weren't feeding from?

SOrry didn't explain it very well! You feed for say, 3 hours from one breast, then 3 hours from the other breast - as many feeds as that happens to be within those 3 three hours. You can start at just 2 hours and keep increasing in half hour slots if you are not seeing any difference in your ds' behaviour. My right boob is the one that causes most probs and does seem a lot better now. I only give one side per feed now. If you get really engorged you can express a little, but only a little to relieve the engorgement. It's all on kellymom, or just google oversupply.

Ahh I'm with you. Well I persisted on only feeding him on the left side, he kept pulling off but persevered and eventually he stayed on for a few minutes. Then kept pulling off and crying again. So offered him dummy and he went to sleep. So I'll see how long he'll last for - normally sleeps for around 3 hours at this time of night.

Gave up on the block feeding as ds was getting a bit upset. Been feed mainly on the right today and expressed a couple of times on the left but have noticed I have a hard lump in the left breast - guess it could be a blocked milk duct. I'll ring my HV in the morning to see if I need to see a doc it feels like quite a large lump and quite long as well. I'll try and get ds to feed more on the left tonight to ease it.
