Hi,

My DS is almost 8 weeks old, born 7 weeks prem. I have been trying to bf until now and he will not but takes ebm well and thriving.

1 week ago we had to introduce formula as i was exhausted, volume of ebm was a burden and now on 4 ebm and 3 formula feeds a day.

He is doing well and content. The only thing is he has gone from 6-10 poos a day to daily and now not poo'd for 2.5 days. I can see he is uncomfortable and lots of horrible wind.

Is it the formula or is it because he is now tewchnically term and was over pooing before.

I'm worried as he has changed so much over few days.

HV coming today but she already told me that babies can go 10 days without pooing and not to worry - sounds like a long time!

First - good for you expressing for all that time. You have given DS a great start.

REgarding formula, I used to add an extra ounce of water (or one less scoop) due to constipation. They do say you can give them cooled boiled water to drink - alot of faff that I couldn't cope with. The other thing that is great for sorting constipation is prune juice. Buy a bottle (they are always the big botttle). Try giving him a spoonful (he will probably like it as it is sweet) - you can sterilise the spoon beforehand with teh bottles. Then freeze as much as you can into little ice cube trays, then put them out into a ziplock bag - voila a few months supply.

Some BF babies don't poo very often at all, but hte key thing to look at is what is normal for your baby. Sounds like the formula has brought a change in your case - so you should think about how to get things moving for him - you don't want him to get a blockage in his little system.

You could also try baby massage on the abdomen area as that might erlieve some of the discomfort
