"I'm following current department of health guidelines".

"Have you studied immunology, mum?"

I agree with Twig.

TBH If it were my mum I'd say something along the lines of "I'm sorry Mum but that's total bollox. I've done a LOT of reading about bfing and am happy with what I am doing....where on earth did you read such an odd idea?"

....or if I was feeling in a particularly playful mood would just keep saying "Why?" (in that annoying way that children do) to all of her suggestions until she gives up

You don't have to explain it to her. Just tell her you want to carry on BFing and get on with it.

i would just say the best way of building up a baby's immune system is to breast feed for as long as possible. Tell her you plan to do it for at least 3 years [even if you're not, just to get the jaw drop value]

id go for the full seven yrs and say you are happy to do it until your dd has her own children if she wants!!!!

just ask her how come she knows more than the World HEalth ORganisation.
and then tell her it's NONE OF HER BLIMMIN BUSINESS

It's an old wives' tale that milk goes sour after a certain time which is absolute RUBBISH and I think was originally put around by men jealous of their babies being on the boob and then perpetuated by baby milk marketing people as an excuse to get you off the boob.
I BF for 2 years and my DD is the healthiest of her peer group.

Tell your mum she is mistaken and it's your choice.

oh and she actually thinks it a good idea to introduce 9 month old babies to other toddlers and babies that are ill, as according to her this also builds up their immunity
