Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and Breastfeeding - Help please

Hello.

I had PMDD prior to becoming pregnant, and it was quite severe. I started taking prozac and it helped significantly (went from not functioning in daily tasks back to just-about-normal). Until this weekend, I had not had my period or any episodes of PMDD. My baby is almost one year old, and my period returned this weekend. This morning I am experiencing the symptoms of PMDD nearly as severe as before I became pregnant and I am panicking.

Can anyone please share their experience with treatments for PMDD that I can take while breastfeeding (I would like to continue, ideally, until my son chooses to stop, which could be years). Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

for you, RoRo.

Not sure why you feel you can't take prozac - if it helped before, it may do again. There is no reason not to take many sorts of antidepressants, inc prozac, esp once your baby is beyond newborn. Your doc should confirm this.

You can also search antidepressants breastfeeding in the mumsnet archives, as there are several threads with info and experience.

I wasn't aware that I could take Prozac whilst bf. That is good news. I will of course confirm with my doctor. Thanks very much, tiktok.

No advice RoRo, just sympathy. Sorry you're having it rough today. Don't panic, you'll get it sorted, I'm sure.

You can share this info with your doctor, RoRo:

www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugline-information-and-factsheets.html

and you can also check fluoxetine on ToxNet, which is a useful site which also confirms use of the drug is not a reason to stop bf.

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT

With a baby aged a year, you and your doctor may decide the use of prozac is not an issue.
