Infant feeding

Am I overfeeding?

DS is 22 weeks, was exc bf until 18 weeks when I introduced one bottle of formula at bedtime (after his final bf) as a desperate attempt to get him to sleep longer (he was sleeping 4 hrs and then waking up for good).

It worked, a bit - for weeks he has been sleeping till 5am, having a feed and then going back to sleep till 7am. He has also gone from the 9th to the 25th centile, which was good (had had serious amounts of hassle over his weight from HVs).

But I've been worrying that it's too much (7ozs on top of bf) and last night I tried just 5ozs. He woke up at 3.30am, went back to sleep for an hour and has been up ever since.

I'm knackered, still concerned about the amount of food - and that he seems to need it. Don't really want to wean yet, I hoped to get to 6 mths.

Does this sound OK? Sounds silly (because am tired, I expect) but am paranoid I've stretched his stomach and taught him to overeat!

Babies do get used to having larger amounts than they would otherwise do, moorhen, and it's one of the drawbacks of formula supplementation. It's not really a permanent stomach stretching, though, and it's easily reversed by doing what you are doing and reducing the amount he has if it worries you....it is normal for babies of his age to wake in the night, though, and it might help to think of ways to somehow 'work round' this by co-sleeping, so any breastfeeds are easier.

Hope this helps.
