Infant feeding

help neede re maintaining supply whilst baby cant feed

hi

my DS is 5 days old and was readmitted to hosp yesterday with an infection. he isnt allowed to feed from meas his breathing is to unstable.

i'm staying in hosp as well and pumping every 3 hrs. i already feel that my milk is going down and looking for help on how to maintain a good supply. he was feeding well from me up until readmission yesterday.

thanks for any help/advice

Hi Loucee - congratulations on the arrival of your baby and fabulous you got feeding going...

Think you probably need to speak to a specialist (Tiktok on here and/or ring one of the BF helplines NCT/LLL/BFN - sure someone will be able to post numbers soon) but your first port of call might be to find out if the hospital has a specialist BF advisor (if it's 'baby friendly' they should have).

Keep pumping, ask if you could have some skin to skin contact with him if he is stable enough, then express immediately afterwards, or at the same time if poss. If not express while watching him or soon after seeing him and just keep pumping regularly. Good luck, hope he gets better soon.

thanks for your replies. i have pumped and pumped and supply seems ok and he's now feeding from me so no need to pump anymore. thanks for your tips, i took the advice but couldnt reply sooner
