she only took the breast 5 times yesterday, each feed taking around 1.5 hours or more. today she´s been on one side only then either refuses to latch on, frustrated or just falls asleep. what should i do? i´ve been trying for c 2,5 hours

You really need to have some help face to face if possible.... Is there a breastfeeding counsellor near to you?

Give one of the breastfeeding helplines a ring :

Breastfeeding Line: 0870 444 8708

www.laleche.org.uk
24hr Helpline: 0845 120 2918

Helpline: 0844 412 4664

Try feeding her in a warm bath.... lots of skin to skin.

Could it be thrush in your breast? I'm obsessed with this, nobody told me it existed until it was too late and had to give up bf. Pain deep in breast? fussy feeding? general feeling that baby hates doing it?

Ok what country are you in?

NewBabyStillBelowBirthWeight · 19/11/2007 09:37

no sign of thrush

she won´t open her mouth to latch on, something that´s often a problem. also means excrutiatingly painful to latch on.

Has she been checked for tongue tie?

My son had this and was really difficult to latch on.... fed much better when it was snipped.

NappiesLaChristmasGit · 19/11/2007 09:39

i was always told not to latch them on unless the mouth was good and open.... a good latch or no latch. not that i always listened, but...

i really think a bf counsellor if you can find one is the best bet...

ooh, do ask about tongue tie (where the frenulum, skin under the tongue which holds it down iyswim, is holding it down too far)

mine had this, is SO easily and instantly remedied. all the advice and demonsrtation of 'how to get a latch' in the world didnt help till i got it sorted.

Warm bath.... try feeding in there.
Take her to bed with you if possible, strip off lots of skin to skin, I know its really hard but just keep encouraging her to feed but without feeling like you need to 'make' her. (I am not saying you are trying to make her its just I know how frustrating it can be when they are hungry but won't feed)

is she seeming desperate for a feed?

if not, try stopping, doing something else peaceful and differtent for a bit. then offer again when shes calm.

or run a nice warm bath and see if that relaxes her. the skin to skin and warmth often does the trick.

If she's not feeding from one side, express to keep supply up but don't overdo it You can use it to syringe or spoon feed her if you are really worried that she hasn't fed.

When is the earliest you can see a b/f counsellor?

or even bundle her (and you) up, go out for a walk, let her fall asleep and then try agian when you get home.

if youve been trying for hours, maybe you could both do with a break?

NewBaby - support lines are indeed available from abroad (at least, NCT's is, and I have taken many calls from women in other countries) but there are counsellors in Belgium, too.

You need more than a talk board - you need to speak to and see someone who can assess the situation .

I haven't a clue what might be happening here, but you and your baby need to see someone urgently....a baby who continues to fall asleep rather than feed at 2 wks could be a medical situation. I hope you get the right sort of help asap.

www.breastfeedingonline.com/newman.shtml
This has some useful videos and advice about breastfeeding. It has videos about latching and compression etc. I found it really useful in the early days of bf my DS. Have a browse through and let me know if any use to you. But good luck. It is hard. Those Bf videos they show at ante natal classes are a bit of a con. I was in quite some pain for a while before things settled down. Keep trying.
