Just been to dr's today and they have proscribed me Lofepramine which according to this and several other sources passes into breast milk . Can anyone give me any advice. Should I go back to the dr's and if so what would you recommend? They know I'm breastfeeding. I haven't taken it yet.

There's a bit of info here www.breastfeedingnetwork.org/supporterline/antidepressants.php

  • hopefully someone here can look it up in Hale for you.

I took sertraline whilst bf DS2 and DD. no probs at all. Go back and say you are concerned - ASAP!! good one for getting things sorted to get on them as presume you need it. That's the hardest bit done, so good luck

See here - suggests that if you are being monitored regularly it is acceptable to take while bf. I'd go back and ask whether another ad might be possible though.

bumper....I'm taking sertraline, and I think someone else on our PN thread is as well.

I was prescribed that by the psychiatrist at the neo-natal unit, so I guess they deal with it a lot.

Have you taken it yet? maybe you should call the docs tomorrow and talk to the doctor again. I'm surprised they prescribed this if they knew you are BFing and from what I can gather sertraline is the safest to use as it comes through less then others in your milk. Is there maybe another reason why this was prescribed? other medicines you are on?

I think most of them have warnings regarding pregnancy and BFing basically because they haven't been trialled (would you volunteer?), but the modern SSRI ADs like sertraline, fluoxetine etc are known to be safer.

Thanks for the quick responses!

Haven't taken it yet (enjoying my last glass of wine for a while!).

Will talk to the bfc tomorrow then perhaps try ringing the dr. I seem to spend my whole life in there at the moment!

Thanks all. Daisy you never saw me on here, right?!

I think you should get a second opinion too Bumper. Is there any reason why the Dr prescribed these particular ones?

There's nothing wrong with questioning it - so I agree, go back and put your mind at rest.

I'm on sertraline too. Apparently it is present in BM but has not been shown to affect LO.

There's no harm in asking your GP. Good luck.

I was told Sertraline only. I would ask why they prescribed that one tbh.

I am on lofepramine too, and I am still breast-feeding and my GP knows that. Have been taking it 6-7 weeks and baby seems okay.
