Infant feeding

fussing 10 week old - is this colic?

Had a nightmare trip to Sainsburys today with screaming beetroot baby. Ended up with someone helping me shop and a check-out opened specially for me (go Sainsburys!).

I've been searching threads for a lot of things that my 10 week old has just started doing, but as they're all together I thought I'd see if anyone had a similar experience.

  1. He is balling his head off everytime I try to do anything out of the house that lasts more than a couple of hours (esp afternoons)and is very clingy during the day.
  2. He is seriously fussing at the breast during the day (looking up and smiling, trying to suck hands at same time, pulling off and turning head from side to side - nice shiny patch on the back of his head now!, tensing body and half-crying if I'm feeding him with me in sitting position). He won't take much EBM from a bottle either.
  3. He is waking every 3 hours for feeds (was just once at night).
  4. He has had green poo for the last 2 weeks.
  5. He is frantically sucking his fingers

The good news is he settles from about 7.30pm, feeds well at night and happily has a lie in with me in the morning.

Does this sound familiar? Any solutions?

sammy

  1. have you tried carrying him round in a sling .. being close to you will probably settle him down easier than being in a shopping trolley .

and can he actually sleep in a buggy .. some babies can't so he might be overtired

I think a couple of hours is pretty good going for a 10 week old

  2. fussing at breast .. ahh bless .. assuming he really is hungry, have you tried feeding him lying down .. some babies just do better lying flat to feed

  3. 3 hours for feeds .. yep that's normal .. sorry .. and they change their sleep patterns .. might be a growth spurt and he might settle down .. once a night was pretty good going you should count yourself lucky

  4. green poo .. normal for bf baby

  5. teething fairy has been

.. he'll probably start drooling, get red cheeks .. doesn't mean that teeth'll come through any time soon .. can take months

    HTH

sorry menat to say the fussing in the afternoons could be a sign that he wants to be in his cot for a long sleep ... 2 to 3 hours for some babies

(try shopping online )

Agree with Twiglett sammy- everything sounds normal to me- It took me ages to be able to go out anywhere properly with dd- had to time everything around her- still do really (8 1/2 months) as she needs sleep and food at similar times and I like her to have time on the floor at home to play during the day- all part of being a mum

Normal behaviour for a 10-week-old just starting to take real notice of the world and getting bored and fussy if anything lasts too long without enough attention being paid to him. Everything else is also on the normal spectrum...you would expect a baby of this age who settles this early to feed fairly often in the day, too

Hurrah he slept until 4.45 this morning from an 11.30 feed!

Thank you all - glad to hear I'm not alone. Every time I'm out, all the other babies seem to be little angels who just sit there quietly and take in the world. I guess the upside is that I seem to have the chirpy little chap who wants to chat and charm everyone when he is in the mood.

I left my trolley in Sainsburys and went back to the car to exchange the car seat for the baby carrier, but he still balled - he will only settle in that with his dad. Feeding didn't help either as he was too stressed out to go to the breast.

It sounds like he is teething, he dribbles constantly too.

I do feed lying down and was starting to do it all the time (lots of yummy sleep for me!), but he still fusses (that's why he has a shiny bald patch on the back of his head!). I am now making a point of feeding sitting up as he is starting to refuse feeds out of the house and I thought it might be my position.

PS - mumsnet is fab!
