12m DD - Cows milk + constipation?

Have just moved my 12m dd from cow & gate premium formula onto cows milk. She is enjoying the new milk but I'm concerned that her poos which previously have been very soft are now like bullets and seem to be causing her some distress as she cries everytime she poos. I can only assume it's the cows milk causing this as I don't think anything else in her diet has changed.

Does anybody else have experience of this?

Yes - right place

Did your daughter have any dairy before moving to cow's milk (yoghurt, cheese etc.)?

It could be the beginning of a milk intolerance. I only say this because DD is milk protein intolerant and for a few of months prior to being diagnosed (at ten months) she was horrifically constipated and was treated with laxatives. In the end she was admitted as she was projectile vomitting, not eating solid food at all, extremely pale and passing blood and mucus, DD had various tests done - which were fine - until they said, well, try this soy formula and cut out all dairy products.

Within 24 hours her bottom went from a red bleeding nappyrash hell to being 95% better and she started eating solids again and keeping her milk down. Her colour came back and within a couple of weeks was her old self.

I'm only speaking from personal experience - no medical knowledge, but it may be worth speaking to your GP about.

HTH.

DS had this last month when we changed over. His poo can still be hard but it is regular again and the hardness is not all the time. I thought it was just his tummy getting used to it.

It did calm down so don't think it is an intolerence.

Thanks both of you for sharing your experiences.

Lilblood - she has had dairy before without any problems which is why I was surprised. Very pleased your dd is better now

Purpleflower - from what you say it does sound as though her tummy is getting used to it. I hope it sorts itself out before long.

It does sound as though she's just getting used to it and I hope I didn't worry you unduly.
