i wasnt able to donate blood again due to a massive PPH with dd1 and was donated 3units so i felt like i paid something back by donating milk for 1 year..

Report
robinredbreast · 28/08/2007 19:23

how much blood did you lose? i had a pph too but think i only lost 750mls
when u where donating your milk where you still bf your baby aswell?

I don't know how much I lost but my Hb dropped to 5.5. After 3 units transfused my Hb increased to 9.3.

Yes I was still feeding on demand whilst donating. I started dd1 was 4.5 months.

very impressive must of given you a great sens of satisfaction i can understand what you mean by you felt like you where giving something back
how many kids have you got
how did you donate the milk just take it down your local hospital and ask them if they wanted it ?or did they collect it or something
did you find it hard to bf in the begining
i did and still do but not as bad
i wondered if it was down partley to being anemic

I found it extremely hard. I was tired and sore for months from the cowboy stitch up that i was given in the perineum. Suffered major cracked nipples until i found silverette, had recurring mastitis, was giving top ups via bottle due to low milk supply caused by the damage from mastitis, then experienced nipple confusion. This was all within the first 3.5 months of bfing my dd1. I then started eating porridge and oat cakes/cookies and was massively over producing. So contacted my local sick childrens hospital and agreed to donate. The midwife supplied me will storage bottles and came once per week to empty my freezer! I donated between 50 - 70oz per week for 1 year then allowed my supply to decrease to just meet the needs of dd1. I continued to bf her until she self weaned at 25 months - this was when i was pg with dd2.

I have just the 2 dds

i whole heartedly believe that my problems bfing stemmed from being anemic. My body was so run down and weak that i was unable to fight any infections and was getting cold after cold/ viral infections/ mastitis etc for approx 6 months. With dd2 i have active 3rd stage which prevented me from having another PPH. I was absolutely terrified about it. I would not wish that experience on my worst enemy. It isn't nice being that weak - i was unable to talk before the blood transfusion. Just kept my head high and tried to mutter i don't want your blood as i am a blood donor!! Then soldiered on after recieving the transfusion as i would not have lived without it

oooh, does that stuff really work? I've been eating porridge every day and have seen a bit of improvement in my supply, but I might try that more milk stuff!

i got the special blend 1st time, then i got the special blend alcohol free and that tastes far better.. it was like syrup though very very sweet. But made a MASSIVE difference in no time.

Just bought more milk plus no alcohol, fingers crossed it helps! I did wake up with one truly enormous boob this morning though, was feeling pretty impressed with myself as he guzzled it all, but then he lay there looking like he was drunk for a while, then threw up his whole feed
