Infant feeding

Sorry but a poo question ...

My DS2 is now 13 weeks and is exclusively breastfed. Mostly his nappies are the usual explosive bright yellow runny type however twice now he has had what I can only describe as thick poos (apologies to anyone who may be eating at the moment). The first time he had this he was only about three weeks old and then again last night. He was very unsettled when he woke for the night feed and ended up being up for over two hours. He started to fill his nappy in the middle of the feed (he only goes once a week or so). When I took the nappy off he was not quite finished and it was very thick, almost formed, almost like how I would imagine a bottlefed babies' poo being like but bright yellow.

I just wondered if anyone knew if this was normal, could he be a bit dehydrated, he certainly has plenty of wet nappies and seems fine. Weight wise he is doing well. As it has happened twice now and it seems to unsettle him it is making me wonder if this is normal.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Are you eating/drinking anything different that could affect your milk?

Demented, my ds was exclusively breastfed until 6 mo. and he did periodically get strangely colored poos (ie something other than the usual yellow runny type). Although I never did figure out what it was, I did decide that it must have been something in my diet that did it. Also, I seem to remember that sometimes just before a cold his poo would change.
Although some mothers find that their diet greatly affects their baby when breast feeding, in general I never found anything (spicy, garlic, grapes etc.) that bothered my ds.
I wouldn't worry if it doesn't persist and he doesn't seem otherwise too bothered.

SofiaAmes, I'm sure I read somewhere that some research showed that breastfed babies drank more milk when their mums had been eating garlic - gives the milk more flavour, presumably.

Azzie, I rarely cook anything without garlic (i'm half-italian), so i'm not sure i could say. My ds certainly eats everything and anything now (he's 21 mo.) so i guess i did something right.

From what I can work out, before babies are weaned, the thickness factor is mostly related to how hydrated or dehydrated they are. If the weather was that bit warmer and/or ds didn?t drink as much as usual this could explain it. If he is not running a temp., not screaming in pain or crying persistently and it doesn?t smell really really bad, I wouldn?t worry about it.

(I stopped bf after a few weeks so have seen all types of poo, ho ho- just so you know, bottlefed poo is almost same colour just not quite so lurid and same thickness!! Also bottlefed poo doesn?t smell as bad as the booklets all tell you in the pros and cons section...)

I have been thinking about this the last couple of days, I can't think of anything I have eaten that would have upset him, I eat alot of spicy and garlicky food and it usually doesn't bother him. The only thing I can think of was chilli con carne that my DH made a week past Saturday that seemed to make DS2 very windy, amazing to think it could be passing through a week and a day later. Just to keep me on my toes he has had two explosive nappies today that have been really watery so I don't think he is dehydrated, it must just be one of these things.

Thanks to everyone for their replies, JayTree the info about the poo was very interesting .

I was told that garlic stimulates appetite. I couldnt eat brussel sprouts while feeding ds when he was very young.
