Infant feeding

FF DS3 (10 weeks) feeding every hour????

Is this normal, or is he having permanent growrth spurt???

This morning he had 4oz at 8.30, 3oz at 9.30, another 3oz at 10.30 - he's sleep now so didn't feed at 11.30....

Even on a "normal" day it's usually not more than about 2hours between feeds (unless he's sleeping of course) and usually has a minimum of about 3-4oz - often up to 6!

Where am I going wrong? I've tried everything I can think of to spread the feeds out (walking round with him, bouncy chair, time on the floor, cuddles, chatting, sling - but he just won't go longer!).

Ds2 fed constantly, and I mean every 1 to 1 1/2 for almost 6 months, and refused to take a bottle, which probably made everything worse! He could actually be that hungry, or he could be taking the p**s.

You didn't mention whether he has a dummy or anything. Ds1 fed every couple of hours like you're describing until I finally figured out that it wasn't hunger, he was just a really "sucky" baby. I don't know how you feel about dummies, and this may open a real can of worms, but you might try one to see if he just wants something to suck on.

DS1 was like that too (BF) it was a nightmare.

DS2 was a dream baby

I don't really like dummies - but did try him on one a few times out of sheer desperation - but he just screamed until I gave in and gave him the bottle - promptly drinking 2-3oz and then settling.......

I can't remember how much they are supposed to take at that age. Could it be because he is averaging 3 oz at each feed and therefore getting hungry again too quickly?

But you must know more than I do as you are onto ds3, and I only have 2!!!

Is it formula - what type?

it sounds like he's snacking at each feed rather than filling up properly. At 10 weeks my daughter was taking 6oz bottles every 3 1/2 - 4 hours. If you could possibly try to space them out, starting from the first feed of the morning, you might see him taking more and more at each feed and consequently lasting longer between feeds.

lazy - I've tried spacing them out and he just gets hysterical .

DS2 used to space them out nicely too - by the time he was 10 weeks old I knew exactly how many bottles to make up for the day.

DS1 was completely different as he was breastfed.

Gogetter - he was on SMA Gold, we had a (brief) disastrous go with Aptimal then back to SMA Gold, now he's on SMA White.

well he just managed 3hrs (but with a quick bf in between) mainly as he was asleep in the pram in town with me and the motion kept him asleep longer....no doubt we'll be back to every 1 to 1 1/2hrs for the rest of the evening.....

This might be a daft suggestion but have you tried changing the teats, so the flow is faster. Is he just not getting enough at each feed cos he can't get it out quick enough? My sis' dd used to feed every 2 hours until she was about 6 months and it was only about a year later when we were talking about it, she realised that she had never upped the teat from the 'newborn' stage ones!

yes - we've got the vary flow ones - give it to him on number 1, if we give it to him on no.2 he ends up choking . Only takes him about 5-10 minutes (max) to get his 2-6oz (depending on his mood LOL) out.....
