Infant feeding

ten week old going too long between night feeds?

Last night my 10 week old BF baby slept from 7.30pm until 6am. He has been working up to this for the last 4 weeks since we put him upstairs to sleep, going from 2am, 3am, etc.

I have heard so much about how small their tummies are at this stage and how often they need feeding that my very paranoid side is wondering if this is normal and should I be worried. He is a good weight and is alert, smiling, etc. He is my third and neither of the others (who were both BF) did the same. DS1 didn't sleep through till he was 11 months.

I have probably jinxed this now and understand that it may not last! (apologies to those with none sleepers I know how hard it is). But you know how worried you get and would appreciate any reassurance.

Don't worry! Let sleeping babies lie

dd was very young when she first slept though, about 7 or 8wo iirc. She was exclusively breast fed at the time.

Be prepared though, I found that when she slept particularly well at night she would more than make up for it feeding-wise during the day.

How big is your baby (weight) my bf babies all slept through very very young (younger than this!) but they were large babies and had big tummies, plus they did feed lots during the day so I wouldn't be too worried unless baby not having wet nappies and seems lethargic during the day or something like that.

I would just consider yourself very lucky to be honest. DD2 started doing this at 7 weeks old and like you I was concerned, but there was no way I could wake her up for feeding and I spent a whole week trying it every night just because I thought she needed extra milk.

I then mentioned it to my health visitor at her 8 week check and asked if I should be making more of an effort to wake her up and feed her...but she simply responded by asking why on earth I would want to wake up a sleeping baby for a feed. She was a good weight and feeding well during the day...so ultimately HV just said not to bother trying to wake her up anymore.

She's 13 months now and still sleeps from 7 until 7.....

He sounds like he is doing really well, good weight, doing everything he should, so I would bathe in well-rested smugness if I were you

Ditto what everyone else has said. DS1 was excl bf to 6 months and slept through from 7-7 from 13 weeks, from 10pm -7 from 9 weeks. If he's a good weight, and still putting on, alert, wet nappies, pooing etc. then don't worry, just be glad you're getting a full night's sleep! Maybe you're just much more relaxed now you've got 3, and he's picked up on it. Well done!

Thank you for the reassurance! He is a good weight, was only 6lb 14 born but has piled it on since and is probably about 13/14lb now. He also feeds a lot in the day and lots of little feeds between 4-7pm.

He has been a good sleeper since the start and still sleeps a lot in the day now. I think a lot of it is the shock of having such a good sleeper, his brother was a nightmare - only ever cat-napped during the day and never went more than 2/3 hours at night.

You are definitely lucky! That's a great weight gain, and just proves my (personal) theory that 12lb is the "magic" weight for being able to sleep longer for one stretch (which hopefully happens over night!!).

My dd is the same - from 9w would happily go from 8pm - 5.30am. But I'm scared to let her, so give her a dream-feed at 4am ish. HV thinks I'm mad, so I am resolved to wean myself off this!

Last night he slept from 9.45 to 5.30 - I think that's officially sleeping through
Not expecting the same tonight unfortunately, he went to bed at 8.30 and seemed a bit disturbed

My dd1 and dd2 both did this from birth - enjoy the sleep as my ds3 never slept for the 1st 7 weeks and then woke every 4 hrs until he was 4 mths. If he's hungry he'll wake sounds like he's getting enough during the day

now I'm seriously about all you with big babies who sleep through

my ds is 15 weeks, 16lbs 14oz at last check - still feeding 2-3 x a night! Sometimes but not always I can get him to cluster feed in evening and we get a longer stretch, once he even fed only 1x in the night, but then he always goes straight back to every 2-3 hours!

lucky you lot!

dd1 was 7.7½ and dd2 6.13 but ds3 was 7.13 so he was the biggest and wouldn't sleep.

were they breast or bottle fed? i think sometimes bottlefed babies sleep through earlier cos they stay satisfied longer.

dd1 was totally breast until 5mths, dd2 totally breast until 6mths but ds3 only totally breast until 6mths had major problems getting him onto bottle and in fact he'd only have sma (which I'd never used) and only from a cup wouldn't take a teat or dummy etc he's a thumb sucker.

nappyaddict · 30/07/2007 23:26

ds is the same. went straight onto a doidy at 4 months. hes also a thumb sucker.

Report
CGOmum · 31/07/2007 00:40

Got to be something with thumb sucking and not wanting teats. Only problem is how to get them off the thumb got to be harder than dummies!.

motb
Don't worry about him he'll be fine you got to be feeding him enough during the day and the fact he's sleeping means he's happy and feels safe so enjoy it it doesn't always last my dd1 slept like this until she was 3yr then she was getting up 3 or 4 times a night for the toilet whether she drunk within the last 2 hours before bed or not - think she liked getting in with us and dh was so soft he let her get his his side all the time.
