Infant feeding

Please help!! DS (11 months) won't stop biting!! :-(

DS has suddenly started biting me whenever I feed him. He sometimes starts biting before he's even had a feed, and this has resulted in several abandonned BF sessions. I'm even experiencing a little engorgement because I'm not able to offload enough milk!

I really don;t know what to do! As soon as he bites I take him off and firmly say 'No biting'. But I can see that he's going to do it again whenever I try to continue. I'm terrified of letting him latch on!

Anyone with any advice?

Thanks Reid

I've just tried to feed him again, and had to give up. One nork looks like it's going to explode!! I'm just about to express some milk off. Argh. I'm not at all happy about this

I've just looked in his mouth, and I think he's got a big molary-type tooth coming through. He's already got 7 teeth, so maybe it's the big ones next? Hmmm can't remember what happened with DD, even though she's only 2.6... [mushbrain]

HI there,
you hvae my sympathies....I had this experience especially with my ms....!
I must admit, I gave up bf after he bit me every feed for like 30 days...!
If it's teething then that would explain a) the biting and b) the being off his food...
There is loads of Info on the Kellymom website.
Have you tried using some calgel/bonjela before feeding. Meant to help to stop them biting.
Can't think of anything else really.
Best of luck touhg!

Sorry,
I do know loads of Baby's that stop biting after a short while, or hardly do it, etc...
my ys only bit me twice, when he was 13 month old, sadly my own reaction, i.e. wincing in pain, put him off....sorry, again not helpful, I suppose...
Just wondering, does your little one take dummies? If so, maybe take them away...meant to help....

always abandone nursing session when he does it and put him on the floor. He will then start to associate biting with being lonely on the floor with no toys! not nice. This usually does the trick.

Thanks for that advice and the link!

I'm definitely going to try putting him down on the floor (I know that will bother him [mean mother]). He does grin at first when I say 'No biting', but when he sees my stern face his bottom lip wobbles. He's never had a stern face directed at him before. Arf!

The thing is, I remember DD biting a couple of times when she first got her teeth through, but it was only towards the end of a feed, and it only happened very rarely. It's just so odd that he's biting right at the beginning before he's even had any milk He has literally had NO milk from the boob since 5am (he had a little in a beaker at lunch-time). I've expressed twice today. I doubt that will be enough to maintain my supply if he carries on this way though.

An update for anyone who has been having sleepless nights over my bitten norks

DS stopped biting today and is carrying on as if nothing ever happened. Hurrah! Thanks for the advice. It obviously helped.

What did you finally do to solve the problem?

Determination - I did as you suggested and popped him on the floor if he bit me. I would give him one or two chances to get on with feeding, and then I would call it quits. He went for about two days with only two feeds

However, I'm not 100% sure it was my actions that stopped the biting. I think it might have just been a phase that he got over by himself... Not sure though really!

Glad he stopped. DD2 (11 mths)nips occasionally and is put straight down with a stern no. She doesn't do it often tho.

Give him some bickie pegs to chew on when not bfing. DD2 bit the top off one the other day tho so be careful, they do seem to satisfy her constant urge to munch.

Sorry didn't see this earlier.
