Cluster feeding - how do I know when to switch breast?

DD (8 days old) has taken to what I think is know as cluster feeding, where she'll feed then 45mins to two hours later she'll feed again. The problem is I don't know whether to give her the same breast or switch. How will I know when she is done with one breast?

Sorry, I posting very prolifically on this topic at the moment - can you tell I'm a new bfing mother!

i got told if they want feeding within 30 min to give the same breast if not use the other side, i could be wrong though as that was almost a year ago when i was told that.

Hi I was told to ensure 30 mins to enable hindmilk to be reached and then swap/alternate if still feeding. No longer than 45 mins per boob. If feed is only a few minutes on one side then use that side at next feed, if full feed (30 min plus) then use other breast next time. HTH

Sorry also you will get used to feeling if breast is drained, feels firm when full and slightly squishy when empty.

You know sumpin'? It doesn't matter

The guidance about timings is ok, but honestly, if you switch sooner or later, it really won't matter in the longer term.

The thing about 30 mins to 'reach' the hindmilk is based on a misunderstanding, and I don't understand why more than 45 mins is a no-no. Baby sorts out foremilk and hindmilk, and timing is unnecessary

In the early days, as long as each side is roughly stimulated the same, you'll be ok. With more established bf, it matters much less, and many babies have a fave breast they use more.

Thanks all, that's great advice. I'm more worried about production than her eating. We certainly seem to be getting on better with the right breast than the left.
