Infant feeding

refusing feeds

Ds is nearly 5 months old. We have given him bits of banana and carrot, but only over the past 2-3 days. He is mixed fed - bf at 7am and 10.30, 7pm (with a 3oz ff first at 6.30) and 3am, ff at 2pm, 5pm and 11pm.

Today, and some day last week, he has been refusing feeds - today he refused the 5pm and the 3oz ff at 6.30pm. I think (but I didn't note it down) this is what he did the other time too.

Why would he be doing this?
Is is something to worry about?
I will go and try a bf in a mo, see if he takes that...

Hi ratfly, thought of three possible reasons;

  1. he may just not be hungry. SOmedays my dd is hungrier than others - and consumes less.

  2. He may need less feeds a day - as he gets older he will have less feeds - and consume more at each feed. My dd is nearly six months and has 5/6 feeds a day.

  3. He might be ready for something more substantial than milk. I dont know much about weaning - and know that mums on MN can get upset if you talk about early weaning - so i'll wait and see if some-one else suggests that.

    HOpe this helps - and hasnt confused you more!

Thanks bizziebee

I was kind of thinking I may be feeding him too often - this is the routine I was using when he was breastfed all day (only ff at 11pm and a 5pm top up). So maybe he is getting more and isn't hungry enough in time for his next scheduled feed? Will try spacing them a bit more today..

It's good to know other babies do similar things. It's very worrying when it's your first and you arent really sure what they should be doing!
