I've been really really good but I would like to have more than 2 glasses of wine tonight. Now that My 8 month old does not have a feed until 4.30 am do you think it is ok to have more or would it be terrible?

Go for it Berrie! My dd doesn't feed until 7am so I'm happy to have more than my regulation 2....however due to having not had more than 2 glasses of wine for well over a year I'm totally sloshed by 2.5......LOL
Enjoy.....

But does your dd have overly rosy cheeks slur her babbling and hiccup a lot? I jest but do you know what the advice is at this stage? I know that the alcohol doesn't pass into the milk so what does and does it pass out again?

LOL Berrie - no, dd is perfectly fine...actually she does have rosy cheeks....hee hee. I've only ever had 3 glasses, and that's only been a few times so I'm not worried about it. I believe the advice (and I'm in the US where they are mega mega strict) is no alcohol at all whilst bf - however I think in the UK things are a bit more relaxed. I read somewhere that alcohol can get into the milk but in microscopic quantities, something like if you have a glass of wine and then feed your baby 2 hours later, baby will have the equivalent to an adult having a teaspoon.....ie. virtually nothing. I'm not sure what else passes into the milk - though I heard a funny story of someone drinking a high energy sports drink (dyed bright blue with some evil food colouring) and her milk came out pale blue when she expressed it......so I guess lots of things go into milk.

I think there are far wiser and more expererienced people on MN so hopefully someone else will respond.

mit x

BLEURGH blue breastmilk! When ds was new, an older woman was telling me that she used to put a teaspoon of whisky in her baby's bottle to make him sleep. He grew up to be fairly normal but that's horrific! I must admit that on New Years' Eve I arranged to give ds expressed milk and shared a bottle of champagne with dh. Unfortunatly ds screamed so long and hard when trying to give him the bottle for some unknown reason that I ended up breastfeeding him anyway. he didn't seem to suffer or sleep any longer come to think of it!!

Hi Berrie, I've heard (on MN!) that alcohol only stays in your breast milk for the same length of time it's in your blood, which is approx 2hrs per unit... HTH and have a nice evening!

Will do!
Am amazed at how the site has slowed down since I posted the message at 6.23pm. It's kind of nice to think of all those Mums out there who have finally put there children to bed. Shall I risk waking my own by calling for dh to bring me a glass of wine?

Dear Highlander,
Disapointment! After all this time, forgot that a bottle shared is little more than a couple of glasses anyway - didn't have the energy to go out for more. Still there's always another day!
