what did you cut out to avoid colic in breast fed baby?

Just about to drop 3rd, had a nightmare with first 2 with night colic whilst exclusively breastfed - don't think I can face another 4 months of 3 hours crying between 3 and 6 am. I have done some research, and if i cut out broccoli, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, dairy and caffeine, as well as grapes etc, apparnetly there is more hope - so what the chuff DO i eat????? Any success stories very gratefully received!

I had a link to an article that said it was more about the way you fed rather than what you ate - allowing the baby to feed one side fully, rather than switching them too much - not sure if that helps at all? I will see if I can find the article.

with ds just cutting out caffine helped (even chocolate ) and drinking fennel tea.

It didn't completely disappear bu made a huge difference

thanks hunker! Armadillo, you have obviously read the sad thought bubble over my head - chocolate deprivation .... can't stand the thought!!! (but will if helps etc etc etc)

May I suggest that you don't routinely cut out all of these things until you know whether or not your baby is actually suffering from colic!

I'm a little unsure about whether food eaten by the mother actually can affect the baby like this - I'm sure I've seen tiktok say before that it doesn't, but the cranial osteopath that we took dd to did suggest cutting out peppers and onions.

Dairy, however, definitely can get through to breastmilk, and caused my dd untold amounts of suffering before we realised that her 'colic' was actually milk intolerance, so that would always be the first thing that I would cut out (I'm still bf at 13 months, so have been dairy free for a long time now!).

I had actually already cut out caffeinated drinks (gave up whilst still ttc, as had taken us years), but still consume some caffeine in chocolate (dark choc which is dairy free, obviously!).

Chocolate, coffee, tomatoes and onions. As hunker said, it did not disappear completely but made such a difference. DS is now 6 months and I can eat onions and tomatoes again, chocolate still seems to make him all doo- lally and I don't fancy coffee.

Drank loads of fennel tea too, apparently good for the milk supply as well.

I'm interested in the fennel tea thing - tried it once years ago and hated it, but will give it another go - I live in Germany and here you can buy fennel tea for babies, which goes against the grain for me, what does anyone else think?

Someone on another forum posted that they had heard that drinking Yakult while BF prevented colic. She tried it and said that the difference was amazing.

I wsa told you can drink the fennel tea yourself or give it to the baby direct.

Ds wouldn't take bottles. I had to drink the foul stuff. YOu do get used to it though.

did the lactobactillus work? And can you add anything to fennel tea to make it more palatable (gin? )

And of course those yakult drinks contain dairy (don't they?), which is no good if the colic actually is milk intolerance.

oh, my head's spinning - I'm so crap at the newborn stage. My mum's just come down stairs (DH away and she's here to look after the children when labour starts) and has just told me that sitting up chatting on mn about worrying about losing sleep over colic is counterproductive and I should go to bed. I'll check this thread again tomorrow. How about changing this slightly - what did you find was GOOD to eat (be gentle with me - the thought of fennel tea is making me sway!)?

Good to eat, errr, baked potatoes with pure sunflower spread? Roast dinner with whatever veg are still allowed. Wholewheat pasta, with tomatoes if you're not banning those straight away, or with dairy free pesto otherwise. Fish and mash. Chicken casserole with rice. Porridge made with soya or rice milk. Toast/sandwiches.

Stopped fizzy drinks ,useda tummy tub at bath time and dd slept with her head slightly higher than her feet.

Hi snipersmum, dropping caffeine did it for me, found even decaff tea/coffee a no no - but replacing with cammomile/peppermint/fennel (can always put in honey if you hate it) was a miracle worker. Good luck and may you have a v.contented dc#3.

thanks guys - mummypossum rofl - i will print off your tips and stick them to the fridge. May come soon, I am Braxton Hicksing as I type v v strongly and regularly, which is how ds2 started....
