hI, MY 14 WK SON HAS BEEN ON SMA GOLD SINCE BIRTH (WELL 2 DAYS AFTER BIRTH!), ANYWAY HE DID POSSET QUITE A BIT AND IT WIFFS AWFUL, HE POSSETES ALOT MORE THAN BY DAUGHTER WHO IS NOW 4 AND WAS ON SMA GOLD AND GUZZLED FOR ENGLAND, ANYWY THE BOY OF LATE FIGHTS OVER HIS FEEDS AND GENREALLY REFUSES OR OWULD PACK IN AFTER ABOUT 4 OZ BUT TAKE THE OCCASIONAL 7 SO I HAVE DONE THE TEAT THING AND NOW CHANGED TO APTAMIL 1ST WHICH HE POSSETS LOTS LESS AND DOES GENERALLY SEEM HAPPY ALTHOUGH HE DID ON SMA UNTIL FEEDING TIME - I HAVE NOW SPACED HIS FEEDS OUT MORE AND DROPPED TO 6 OZ BOTTLES TILL HE IS REALLY BEGGING FOR IT WHICH HAS HELPED THOUGH HIS INTAKE IS STILL ONLY AVERAGING 30 OZ FOR A 15LB BABY AS HE IS NOW - IS THIS LOW? - HE FEEDS ONCE OR TWICE THROUGH THE NIGHT EVEN THOUGH A FEW WEEKS AGO HE SLEPT THROUGH A FEW TIMES.

ANYWYA THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS TOPIC IS SINCE ON APTAMIL HE HAS HAD EXPLOSIVE POOS - HE WOULD STRAIN AND PUSH A HARD POO OUT ON SMA BUT NOW ITS LIKE WHEN I BREASTFED MY DAUGHTER - UP HIS BACK AND THE LOT - ITS ONLY BEEN 2 DAYS ON APTAMIL TO DATE - IS THIS NORMAL OR SHOULD I SWITCH BACK AND GO WITH THE SICK INSTEAD?

Owwww my ears switch your caps off.

I think SMA Gold is dodgy. I know so many babies who suffered tummy upsets with it. Aptamil seems a lot nicer on their tummies, and it's a GOOD thing that his poo is like breastfed baby's poo I think.

Personally I used Cow and Gate as it didn't produce quite so much diarrhoea as the Aptamil.

One thing I did notice was that ds1 drank twice as much daily as ds2 at the same age, yet their weight gain is the same. They take what they need, honestly, don't worry about how much you put in a bottle, it could just be that 'little and often' is what your son needs.

thanks (i will turn it off now!), i think it just makes me nervous coz my dd was a piglet and my ds is a picky monster - she feasted 2 and a half to 3hrly and hes more like 3 till 4 only its only just took us 14 weeks to realise this! Your right his weight gain is similar. My dd also slept through form 9 weeks which was super hence this fellow although did a few times is up once and sometimes twice if it take his fancy. Was tempted to be mean and offer him water at the 2 nd feed as he only takes a few ounces onthat one as oposed to the lot on the first waking, has anyone tried this - alternativly i could try not offering him as much on the 2nd waking so hes starved on waking at a reasonable hr - gawd can you tell im desperate for a sleep solution!!

Ds1 was wonderful. he slept 12 hours a night from about 6 weeks old.

Ds2 is another matter entirely and (initially) I treated him exactly the same.

but he just needed smaller feeds, he needed them through the night, he still wakes up for a night feed 50% of the time and he's 10 months old.

But he is a NORMAL baby. Ds1 wasn't, he was abnormally docile and greedy!

When I weaned ds2 at 6 months, I soon found he would eat anything, as long as it wqasn't on a spoon.

But it didn't help him sleep any better, so don't worry about anyone saying it will. It most likely won't.

mmm, i weaned dd at 14 weeks (4 yrs ago) and want to wait till at least 17 weeks at minimum but yeah all those helpful MIL's say oooo hes wanting some food - i have contemplated offering him baby rice for a few weeks but think i will hold off good and proper - hes happy enough. DD wouldnt even sit still and had to be carried everywhere where as this chap is quite chilled (bar feeding!). Thanks anyway

If he isn't drinking much milk, I wouldn't even think about weaning him until he is snatching it out of your hand. He needs the milk far far more than he needs mushed pear or flaked rice.

Mish2 - I wouldn't worry about the poo thing. My DS is on Cow and Gate and always had soft runny poo until he was having three solid meals a day. It sounds like the SMA was making your DS a bit constipated. Off the top of my head I think the quantity of milk he's having is on the low side of normal. There's no point at all in thinking about solids yet as it sounds like milk is fulfilling all his needs just fine .
