Infant feeding

Milk coming in different this time round

Hi everyone.
DS3 is 5 days old, born by planned c section and has been EBF so far. My milk started to come in on day 2, and he's been feeding a lot since he was born, but I'm starting to worry because things have been so different to feeding DS1. (DS2 was in NICU for several weeks and I expressed, so can't really compare). First time around with DS1, I had engorgement, leaking, the works. I'd leak when he cried etc. etc. But this time, apart from a few hours of feeling full on about day 3, I haven't been engorged at all, and haven't leaked once. Breast pads are unopened in the cupboard. My breasts do feel heavier if he hasn't fed for a while, but not that solid uncomfortable feeling I remember from DS1.

He's having wet and dirty nappies, but I can't stop worrying that something isn't right. He's quite a slow feeder - long pauses between swallows and long periods on the breast not actively swallowing, which I've just been going with. Could he be removing too little to have stimulated my supply, and if so, is it too late to fix this at this point?

Thanks in advance for any advice, or experiences of less engorgement with second or third babies.

I've only had one baby but I never felt full or leaked when she was younger. I was always worried about it but I think as long as they are putting on weight and have enough dirty and wet nappies then I would try not to worry Smile

DS2 is five weeks old and I experienced the same as you. No actual engorgement. No leaking. Only realised milk was in because I could hear him gulping! It was all very confusing, but nappies fine and gaining weight well. Had to start using breast pads a couple of weeks down the road though.

Same here... No engorgement like with dd1 have had a few leaks from other breast when feeding from other one during let-down.

Thank you for the replies, it's hugely reassuring that other people have had the same thing and are feeding ok! He was weighed yesterday and has lost about 5% of birthweight in 5 days. The midwife says she's not worried, so I'm trying not to fret.

Exactly the same here. First dc I was engorged, leaky, rock solid boobs etc. Second dc and it was seamless. I think my body just knew what to do and dc2 was a more efficient feeder. Both ebf to 6 months and alongside solids until they were 3.
