Infant feeding

6 week old baby cries during breast feed

I have posted on here before, and had some helpful advice that persauded me to carry on with breast feeding when I was going through a difficult time in the early days with my DD.

Initially, I was really worried about my supply, but I persevered and that has sorted itself out. If anything, DD struggles to cope with the flow now!

However, I still have a problem in that sometimes when feeding, she pulls herself off the breast with a cry/scream, cries for a few seconds or minutes before being desperate to latch back on and suckle. I talked to my HV about this as it makes feeding stressful and uncomfortable, and she thinks it is just colic.

Have tried the usual things: gripe water, infacol, colief, cranial osteopathy etc but she is still struggling. Has anyone else experienced this, and what did you do?

Thank you.

is it when you have a let down? ie when your milk comes down quicker with a sort of whoosh IYSWIM? sometimes little babies find it takes some getting used to.

Could it possibly be thrush? Are you in any pain when you are feeding, flowers?

I don't think it is thrush as I don't have any pain, rashes etc. Or is there something else that I should be looking for?

I do have strong let downs sometimes that cause DD to cough, but she doesn't worry about this, and the fussing often occurs well into a feed when my milk supply is "stabilised".

Do you wind her part way through the feed?

Great easy way to wind is to just sit baby on your lap in an upright position...the wind will come up of its own accord and is a gentle way to wind

Another thought is that my littlest had gastric reflux which used to cause her some pain during feeding akin to heartburn. Easily remedied. Have a chat with your HV

Happy New Year!
