Infant feeding

BF to formula... which type?

I've breast fed for nearly 6 months and thinking of changing to formula. How do I do it? Introduce a night feed..and then give more regularly? I was thinking of trying the SMA comfort as its lower lactose. My ds has always suffered from a lot of bottom wind so thought this would suit him more, but can I go straight into this or do I have to use something else before? Also he's BF on demand at the moment. I realise I can't do this with formula so how many times in 24hr period do I feed him? Thanks in advance

We used Cow and Gate Comfort when we introduced formula to my super windy and constipated son. It helped. We mix fed (breast and formula) til he was nearly one. If you compare formula ingredients and composition you'll see they're all identical, apart from Hipp which is organic. All made in the same factory to the same regs. Cow & Gate is cheapest, Aptamil most expensive. It's just branding that accounts for the difference but anecdotally some babies tolerate one brand better than others. Start with the cheapest and see how you get on?

How did you introduce it? Did you notice any changes? Slept more/slept less/no different etc?

We did aptamil, but only because that was recommended to us.

I have no idea the 'right' way, but I basically started expressing feeds first to help cut my supply gradually. It actually took me about a month, maybe more, to move to formula completely. It worked well for me that way, but I'm sure there are loads of ways you can do it.

If I remember correctly, it's about 5 feeds a day, but it's a while ago now Grin

DS was a terrible sleeper. I used to go to bed at 8 and DH introduced the formula at 10pm. That was the first one. The last one to go was the morning feed.

Check the ready made formulas for Palm oil, I think cow and gate have it but aptamil doesn't.

Forget - is palm oil good or not?

I was told not to use comfort milk as it contains potato starch. I was also told cow and gate and aptamil are made by the same company and are practically identical. Health visitor's advice varies so much.

I've heard Hipp Organic is good

Also if he's got a sensitive stomach he might not react well so you might have to try and few or try a goat milk one which is gentler on stomach.

Personally I would kept breastfeeding, it's so much less hassle that ff, I've done both. When kids get ill and teething - which you are just at the beginning of - breastfeeding soothes them to sleep when they won't eat from illness/teething pain.

Just my opinion though. Otherwise try Hipp. I would personally give a bottle before lunch and do bf morning and eve

Turns out he just gnaws on the teat grinning and won't actual suck so looks like we might be breast feeding bit longer yet...Hmm

Just pick one that you can get easily. One that is stocked at your local shop.

Most mums I know use Aptimal, as do I. Probably because you can get a starter kit. It's readily available and I use the ready made cartons too.

What works for one baby may not work for others. Just pick a normal milk and off you go!

We used hipp organic as we found that aptamil caused projectile vomiting in DS.

My point was that all babies are different, Aptimal doesn't cause projectile vomiting in all babies. You baby may have projectile vomited on an ingredient in all formula except Hipp!

You just never know, we all had to start somewhere with one formula and I bet most people just pick one or one someone they know used not because of the ingredient X

Whoa! I was just offering advice based on my experience. I'm perfectly aware that different milks suit different babies... and that DS spat out every other milk than hipp.
I think that aptamil causes projectile vomiting in some babies as it contains fish oil.

I just checked the hipp ingredients because I hate the fishy burps DS does, but it does contain fish oil
