Infant feeding

11months..how little milk can he survive on!

Hello - ds is 11 months and has never taken to formula (which I don't mind). I'm going back to work 2 days a week early next yr. He has a feed around 4am (which I do mind but thats another story!) and a little one before bedtime. When I'm with him all day he has a couple more here and there usually when he wakes from his naps. Pretty much got him out of having one before naps as I didn't want sleep to be boob dependant! What shld I do when I go back to work? I feel its a bit late in the day to get into expressing and not sure he'd take milk from a cup anyway - usually throws it at me. Thanks :0

He'll be fine.

He might take cows milk from a cup when he's bigger, he might not, he might go through phases of asking for it a lot, then not at all (my DS1 does this).

I have an 11mo DS as well who is still bfed - I've been back to work since October and he barely takes any milk when I'm not with him - have been 2 or 3 days a week but will be doing 4 in January.

He may eat more food on days when you're not with him - make sure he has access to meals, snacks and water and he'll be fine.

Good luck with it!

I can see why you will be interested in the answer to my one! I went back to work at the beginning of December 3 days a week. My DD was nearly a year at the time. I spoke to a lactation counsellor I knew and she advised that I feed in the morning and when I got back from work. She also said that at that age my DD did not need milk during the day and to just advise the nursery to offer her water instead.

In my case, my DD started drinking a lot at night for the first month. I suspect that this was partly reassurance/partly the bugs she had picked up at nursery.

Any questions, feel free to shout.

Hi Worley..sorry for late reply - not had much computer time! Don't get me wrong, if he's really unsettled nothing works quite like a boob but I think we just kept trying. He has a dummy and I don't think he'd sleep without it. I worry about the nursery issue too as we always have the boob as back up. I'm hoping that it wont be an issue as its not me putting him down. He wont be expecting to be fed because its not mummy (ohhhhh god...I'm dreading it :-()
