Infant feeding

Constipation, am I over feeding him

Hi everyone, I just started solids 3 days ago with my 5 month old. We have given sweet potato, broccoli, banana, avocado, apple, pear. I keep feeding until he doesn't want any more. He is also breastfed.

Today he got all red faced and eyes watered and grunted and I checked his nappy and there was hard poo stuck to him with more waiting to come out. He eventually passed loads of solid poo much to his distress.

Did I cause this? Have I over fed him

You have given an awful lot of foods for only have started a few days ago. I would give 1 food once a day for several days before moving on. Although at 5 months you are slightly early in starting in the first place.

Also go easy on the banana it can cause constipation. So don't feed to much of it in one go.

I think it would probably be an idea to hold off on solids, not stop, just slow down if he's guzzling so much it's displacing milk as it could be the sudden change which is causing constipation.

Are you doing purees or baby led weaning? It might be fun to let him try some finger foods because that will slow him down a lot as to how much he can take in but he shouldn't get frustrated because it's a fun experience for them.

I don't think he's been overfed but bananas can constipate

Thanks everyone for the replies. You're right I have given him too much too soon I'll go back and stick with sweet potato for a few days and then add another food and stick with that. I am back to work soon and I think I got carried away with it all! I will be doing puree food for a month or so then start on finger foods but with being back in work soon I just wanted to establish solids

Yes I don't think the age is an issue :) Just start slowly and build up. Personally I don't think it matters if you introduce a lot of foods vs one at a time, unless you are worried about allergies, but volume, certainly, should start small and increase slowly.

Make sure he is getting plenty of liquid...milk and some water if he will take it.
