Breastfed baby, six months, has lost 80g in weight since last week - do I need to worry?

So far ds's weight gain has always been great, but last week he was weighed and he had gained very little in the previous month, now he seems to have lost 80g (about 5oz) since last week. It was the same set of scales, so can't be an error really - or can it?
Obv. I get very worried because of ds's other problems... (he has a genetic disorder of some kind and suffers from frequent chest infections). What should I do?
He has been on a little bit of pear at teatime for the last two weeks, if that makes any difference.

80g is more like 3oz, isn't it? was he weighed naked etc.? What centile is he on (not that I necessarily set much store thereby )?

I think it's quite normal for weight gain to plateau . How does he seem otherwise, taking his problems into consideration?

He's hovering around the 91st percentile, was 98th at birth.
He's okay really, just getting over yet another chest infection/two weeks of AB's, but fine atm, also happy, peeing, pooing etc.
yes he was weighed naked
you're right it is more like 3 oz - blooming imperial

Couldn't that just be the difference between being due a poo one week, and having had it, just before weighing, the next? I wouldn't worry about this particularly.

Hmm, I reckon if I were you I wouldn't worry just yet, but watch him like a hawk and weigh him every week for the next 2 or 3 weeks to see if the loss continued or stabilised. But obviously you're extra worried... is your HV any good?

She is good, but on annual leave atm...

I had NQC's thought about the poo too. How about weighing weekly until Christmas/New Year, then if you're still concerned seeing someone.

The only problems is, with my HV being away: How do I weigh ds?

Easy strip him down and step on the scale with him. Then weigh yourself alone and do the math.

rent out baby scales from the chemist's? We did that here, don't know whether you can in the UK.

Same thing happened to me with DD. I really do not think it is an issue. Babies' weight gain slows at this point usually because they are more active using more calories. He may have also lost weight due to chest infection. No need to try and weigh him - just wait till HV is back.

weight is an unreliable factor re wellbeing. If he is otherwise fine, then he is OK.

nice to see you on MN, mears

Thank you mears.
I was expecting him to slow down with his weight gain, but was a bit flummoxed by the weight loss.
Will try not to worry too much about it and see how it goes!

Emkana - he could have lost that amount in a big poo . Understand why you would be worried though. Can't believe he is 6 months old already.

Well done for still feeding Berolina - that is entirely down to your effort. Brilliant.

Oh, it's really been bery very easy after we got those initial troubles sorted

80g is nothing at 6 mths - there is no reason to compare weekly weight gains or losses in a baby of this age at all. Minor fluctuations are normal in an older baby - they can be accounted for by 'output' as has been suggested, or a minor infection, or extra activity. There is no reason for weighing again until you can do so again on the clinic scales.

No need for concern at all, unless you think he is poorly.
