Bfing going well today...in fact am dictating this to dh while ds feeds. But ds has been feeding now since 6.15 - one and a quarter hours! He is on his 2nd side and seems to be feeding.

Is this normal? He is 6 weeks.

Yes it is normal! My advice is to go with the flow, however I'm really not an expert, I'm sure someone much wiser will be along soon! I've been bfing ds for 9 months now, and remember that at that stage (and at other times, growth spurts etc) feeds seemed to go on forever!

Having said that I also came to realise that SOMETIMES he wasn't really feeding, more using me as a dummy. If this was the case I'd gently remove him and then gauge his reaction to see if he really was hungry.

If you listen carefully, can you hear him swallow? Or does he have a suck-suck-pause rhythm? I think when they go from that kind of rhythm to all suck and not pause/swallow it's more comfort (although they still may be getting little bits of milk).

It's not an exact science though!

yes it's fine. my dd used to cluster feed for up to 3 hours before bed time.

Yes it's normal. He might just be doing it for comfort rather than for milk, but either way is good if you're happy with it. Enjoy sitting down with your LO - if nothing else, these cluster feeds are a great excuse to do very litte for a while!

thanks all. I always wondered what was classed as a cluster feed!

Also I think 6 weeks or around that time is when my dd and ds had feeding frenzies - growth spurt, maybe?
