help poo and pain in newborn

Our newborn (one week old) is in lots of pain trying to go to the toilet and is passing green stools, she is crying uncontrollably and clearly in serious discomfort. I've tried researching it but everything is coming up from GED or colic to not getting enough hind milk or potentially the iron supplements I'm taking crossing the breast milk. Can anyone advise based on experience? I can't stand seeing her in pain and discomfort like this!

I've read that really green poo, and discomfort can be signs of a dairy allergy/intolerance....my DD had issues with constipation and was always in pain when trying to go but I stopped bf and moved to comfort formula and not had a problem since.
I would take her to the doctors to find out for sure, but maybe something you're eating could be passing through your milk and upsetting her tummy?? Or as you say, the iron supplements.

Ladypug you said on your thread yesterday night the paed had told you to leave off the iron tabs for a couple of days....you said you were going to do this. 12 hours is not sufficient time to see a difference.

Has it got worse?

Hey tiktok, it's not worse but not really better and yes I've now been off iron for 24 hours but yesterday she had poo again but green. My mil said this could be colic instead so I'm just waiting it out to see but thought I would ask on here (I still feel it's iron related but worried it could be something else). I have to see paed on Thursday if no improvement

Might sound really stupid....but doesn't iron tend to make poo turn black?? Or is that just in adults?
I'm definitely more leaning towards some sort of allergy/intolerance to something passing through your milk, or possibly the milk itself.

Green poo is on the normal spectrum.

Sounds like my dd as a baby. she was mill intolerant.

tiktok I come to that conclusion because the OP said her baby seems in pain as well.
The PP has just described the symptoms of a milk allergy....sounds like OP's baby!

Thanks everyone, I only have milk in cereal but will cut that out too and see if it helps. Poo is now yellow again but only a small amount and still lots of pain passing it. My poo went green before going black on the iron tablets (sorry tmi but that's why I thought it could be the iron)

Don't use a soya substitute though.

if there is an intolerence to the protein in milk, soya is similar so also causes problems in up to 40 percent of cases.

Ladypug, stay off the iron tabs as suggested by the doctor.

You can't stop drinking milk at the same time - only do this if you are sure it's not the tabs.

Cows milk protein intolerance in a breastfed baby is rare. It exists, but it's too soon to 'treat' for it at a week.

Thing is, if you stop drinking milk at the same time as you stop the tabs, and your baby's symptoms improve, you won't know what did the trick :)

snuffly/mucousy/ aa bit bunged up?
dry skin?
fidgety when feeding?

Hi Giles no. It's mainly agony when she poos and full on crying for periods of time. Gp said give it till tomorrow and see once iron is out of system

Giles, what would those unrelated simptoms mean? My baby has has them all except for fidgety feeding.

I hope so poocatcher, I hope I'm just overreacting - she just won't stop crying and she's in so much pain, it doesn't seem normal. The other ingredients are: elemental iron, sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate, sodium ethyl parahydroxybenzoate, maltitol liquid, aluminium magnesium silicate, sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate, citric acid, chocolate and peppermint flavours and purified water

I can only speak for my dd really. I don't know how I knew but I just did.

at first I thought it was just gastric symptoms. it was discounted at first because of the anti biotic even though shed started showing signs befire she had them. and because she was gaining weight. well given she spent days receiving iv nutrition due to illness. any food basically meant she out on weight even though she exhibited other symptoms.

I assumed the congestion was down to illness and the dry skin because eczema runs in the family.

yet it all went, the bloating the stinky acid poos, the crying, the dry skin, the congestion as soon as she started on the right milk.

it was then clear that it was basically all related.

Tiktok always has excellent feeding advice. I too remember green poo being fairly normal. I don't have much to add other than had you thought about baby massage? It can help digestive system and I really enjoyed it as a 'bonding' experience.

Thanks Giles, so yours was a milk allergy? So you just came off the milk and/or all dairy?

Thanks Redcar, yes doing massage currently at home. Not out the house properly yet to join groups but hopefully soon!
