Infant feeding

Windy bum...

Hi.Newbie poster sitting here with frazzled nerves after my 9wo DD has just screamed for 3/4hr until she made herself sick. Ended abruptly with lots of bum wind! Wondered if any of you more experienced types could answer some of my stupid first-time mum questions?!

When feeding, she doesn't seem to be able to bring up any wind by back-rubbing, etc. Does this mean I'm crap at it, or can the wind be building up in her guts as she's digesting iyswim?

Is there anything I can do to get rid of bum wind?! Have tried cycling her legs, but no joy.

OH LORDY, she's off again...

Does sound like she's having trouble getting rid of her wind - we had this with ds. We found all of the following helpful:

Rubbing small of back
Rubbing small amount of warm olive oil into tummy
the cycling legs thing
Patting the bottom whilst cuddling and soothing
Small amount of boiled water between feeds
Infacol (it got worse!!!)

Does your dd bring up large amounts of her feed and does she have any trouble pooing? Our ds had reflux and we found the wind/constipation was part of that.

If you don't find anything is working then it might be worth having a chat with your hv for some more advice. Also try winding throughout the feed as much as you can rather than just at the end and also try and and feed upright rather than horizontal.

Are you lobbing infacol in before a feed, I've found it a great help in the past. I've also found after having my two that babies differ somewhat. dd1 took 12 weeks to bring up a burp and it was one of my friends who finally found her windy spot for me and that stopped the hell your currently going thru, have you tried her over your knee?? (dd2 incidently has always belched like a trooper!)

Thanks for your advice guys. Have had some success with both 'over the knee' and 'tummy-rubbing' producing some fine trumps! Will have to carry on all night now even though my arm is dropping off!

Thanks. 24hr Tesco opens in half an hour, will be driving, armless, to pick up some infacol! Come to think of it, the drive might settle out some tummy bubbles too!

Wouldn't ya know it - as soon as I got the carseat out, she's sleeping like an angel. Well, an angel that's kicked it's pants off anyway!

HI Katsma,

I have found that to wind DS well I put him over my shoulder and slap his back with a cupped hand. It is the same technique as chest physio and sounds harsh as the cupped hand makes quite a sound.
I agree that infacol is very good

Thanks Busti (!), will give it a go. We're still in PJs and both having a bad hair day after a wakeful night. Hope no-one calls!.....

Don't you dare let visitors set your agenda just enjoy being with your baby. Soon enough you'll be back to a tight routine with no time to scratch your arse.
Remember being at work and longing for day in your pjs!!!!

Katsma,
By the way how is the infacol working?

Infacol seems to be working a bit - can hear her fizzing as she's feeding!

You're right about wanting a duvet day when I was working. Now I miss work (well, the people anyway!) Wouldn't swap back for the world though.
