Breastfeeding advice 2 wk old - night feeds

After my 10 day check up my little one had regained his birthweight plus a bit more. Having mentioned to the midwife that I was having to wake him up to feed at night she told me to stop it and just to feed him at night when he woke and demanded it . The past 2 nights my little one has slept for 5 hours straight without waking to be fed. The extra sleep we are getting is amazing however I'm worried that my milk supply will suffer due to the lack of feeding. I have noticed an increase in my little one feeding during the day since we stopped waking him at night. Am i worrying for nothing or is there a chance my supply might be affected due to the lack of night feeds? Any advice would be great, being a FTM I feel like I'm second guessing everything and unsure what to do for the best Confused

Congratulations Flowers
I would let the baby lead in this situation as hes gaining weight & feeding extra in tbe day. 5 hours is fine at night (lucky you!Wink)

After a few days your supply will adjust so not so uncomfortable in the morning.

Take care & look after yourselves.

I couldn't bf ds1 but expressed after each feed. My understanding is that you should 'feed on demand' i.e. when baby is hungry, and your milk supply will adjust itself to your baby's needs.

Could you send your lo round to have a word with mine please Grin but really, your supply should adapt and as long as he's getting enough throughout the day he'll be fine. The only issue I can see is if you plan on using bf as a contraception, the info I read said feeds have to be at least every 4 hours for that to be effective.
Congratulations on your baby and enjoy the extra sleep, without wanting to put a downer on it, sleep patterns seem to be very changeable while they're little.

Very considerate of young Emhoops!
I wouldn't dream of waking him at night to feed. In the daytime I probably would nudge him awake for a feed if he was asleep for more than 3 or 4 hours.

Thanks for the replays everyone, it's the first time I've posted on Mumsnet and it's great to get some reassurance. You read so much on the internet is hard to know what to do for the best sometimes Smile x
