Infant feeding

6 week old feeding and sleeping

Hello lovelies,
My 6 week old has spent today feeding every hour for at least half an hour then sleeping until he wakes crying to be fed (he slept well last night and woke to feed twice). He's exclusively bf'd (except for one bottle a day with his Dad so I can go to bed early!) Is this normal? Could he be having a growth spurt? Or is this something I should worry about?
It's not really affecting me except for sore boobs, how hungry I am and that I can't get anything done around the house :)
I'd really appreciate any advice xxx

Not something to worry about at all as it is well within normal behaviour and experience.

People talk about growth spurts happening at particular times, but there is no evidence for this. Babies are unpredctble in their needs, and may need extra contact/closeness/feeding at any time, and the best response is just to accept it and go with the flow.

Your baby needs you to respond to him, so he gradually learns he is 'right' to trust you and trust your love and trust your care. These periods of intensity tend to lessen as babies grow, anyway.

Not sure why you would be sore though - try paying careful attention to the way he is positioned. You could phone a breastfeeding helpline about this, and share more details.

Your baby does not care a bit that he is keeping you from the housework, BTW :) :) :) A sling might help, so you can carry him and keep him close while you clean the shower (alternatively, you could install yourself on the sofa with a bag of biscuits!).

Thank you tiktok what a lovely reassuring message! I suppose I mean my boobs feel empty and depleted from constant feeding, and I've never been so hungry!
I've gone with the sofa and biscuits option btw ;)

My 10 week old has occasional days like this. Just roll with it. I'm not sure I really believe in the special growth spurt days thing- their whole lives are a growth spurt at this age!!!! I got a bit sore last week and I reckon it's because I've got lazy with the latch. dd is a bit of a champion feeder but resting her on a cushion whilst I eat/play with ds/mn/do anything else I need to do was probably just too lazy and I needed to position her better! I also think dd gets quite thirsty too sometimes so has a mini feed to quench her thirst.

I know what you mean Nicky, I think sometimes DS feeds because he wants a snuggle!
