Infant feeding

Why won't she stop feeding?

At 11.15pm I started feeding my 4 week old. All in all she was on for an hour until twenty past 12 (both boobs) she was obviously still hungry so I then gave her 120ml of formula which is a full feed for her age & weight. After a massive poo she went back on the boob for another ten mins. I thought she was done so I put her down but I could hear her mouth going. I tried with a dummy which had to be held in place, & I finally gave in after 50 mins of her mouth going to give her more boob. She has now been on for 40 mins. That amount of food can not be normal for a 4 week old? Why is she so hungry? None of this has come back up & she has been feeding all day. I am absolutely bored sh1tless of feeding & just want to go to sleep. It is now 2.35am. Why is she never satisfied?

Babies 'tank up' at night in order to boost your supply. When DS was 6 weeks old, he once spent 24 hours on the boob, non-stop.

Co-sleeping saved my sanity! And feeding in a sling in the daytime.

She's cluster feeding. She's encouraging yuor supply, getting food and comfort from it...she's 4 weeks old, its all totally normal.

My 2 week old was on for 4 hours earlier. Breast milk is digested in 90 minutes, it's more efficient than rocket fuel!

Iirc from ds1 it improves at around 6/7 weeks when their jaws get a little stronger and they can take more in a feed. At 4 weeks she's building up your supply though, so the formula might be counter productive

Remember "today's demand is tomorrow's supply".

DS is 4 days old and has been on and off the boobs since 2.30 this afternoon and is still going but now he's very fussy and coming on and off and getting frustrated. Every time he takes himself off I try and put him down but he just fusses and fusses until I put him back. He doesn't fuss if I leave him just lying ony chest. I know this is all normal but it is quite hard too! sometimes DP can settle him if DP holds him.close long enough for him to realise he's actually full and DP has no boobs he can suck for comfort.

They have a growth spurt at 4 wks. Best thing is to feed on demand as it boosts your supply as said above. DD once fed for 7 hrs straight!

As someone else already pointed out - she's feeding more to try to increase your supply. This could
Coincide with her 4 week growth spurt (as someone has already pointed out too).

I also second the comment that the formula could be working against you. The formula isn't as easily digested as the breast milk and will lie heavy in the baby's stomach. The baby will take in more
Formula that breast milk and that might stretch the baby's stomach out. The result is that baby needs more breast milk to feel full but your body struggles to supply it as you've given formula instead of offering breastmilk - the result
Is that your supply doesn't adapt.

I know it's tough but just try to keep nursing. At times like this Netflix is your friend! I couldn't survive without Netflix and co sleeping.
