Hi ladies, really worried. I made the decision yesterday to start mainly formula feeding with some expressed breastmilk thrown in once a day as my 6 week old was becoming too much. He would literally sit on my breast all day and wasnt sleeping as he was so hungry all the time.
So today, and yesterday, gave him bottles fine. I should also mention, i have been expressing and giving him the same madela swing bottles that are best for breastfed babies for about 3 weeks and he used these bottles absolutely fine. Yesterday, i tried the dr brown bottles as he has suffered wind and reflux, and with stopping the boob action all together and just using bottled express and formula i felt a bottle that helped with wind etc would be best.
Both yesterday and today for two feeds he has used the dr brown no problem. I gave him a feed. And my husband. Then his third feed today i had expressed some milk so went to give him tht in dr browns. Wouldnt take it. He puts it in his mouth and for ages was sucking away. Hungry. He sucked and sucked and then got agitated. When i checked the milk hadnt gone down, like 15 mins later. So, i swopped him and tried the madela bottle. A bottle he has used loads. Again, sucking away, but then after a few minutes when no milk is coming out he gets upset. I had no choice in the end but to put him on my boob, which he immediately started drinking from, but i had expressed and they were feeling pretty flat. Im worried i have affected my milk supply firstly, but also, whats happend with him? Its not like hes refusing the bottle, hes sucking away, just nothing seems be coming out! Getting really upset. I made the decisoj yest to stop bf and now im back at square one, just when i had got my head around it all. Please help!

Oh lovey you are really having a tough time with this, aren't you?

Firstly, don't worry; it's not possible that in two days you will have dropped supply so much that you can't feed him. You always have milk there even if the breast feels "empty" because milk is made on demand. So the baby is fed, even if it's not in the way you would like just yet.

Secondly, yes feeding in the first six weeks is intense and what they call "boot camp", but literally constant feeding (literally constant? Were you getting any breaks at all?) is not normal, and you don't have to just put up with it. Unfortunately, you might have to search for and perhaps shout for support, because it might not be immediately available/obvious. Especially when you are in the position you are now, where the ultimate fallback of formula is not working.

Has your baby been checked for tongue tie? And if he has and they have said he doesn't have it, how did they actually check?

Don't worry, it will be fixable, whichever way you want to go.
