Infant feeding

Help needed!!! Can't breastfeed for 24 hours

On Wednesday I'm due to have some dental treatment, which is urgent (I've been waiting since May). As a result of the drugs I'm not supposed to breast feed for 24hours. My dd is nearly 11 months and I have been trying to wean her off as for the last month or so as she has been biting. I have tried many of the 'no biting' exercises, but nothings really worked.
We have also been trying formulas, but can't seem to find any that she likes. been trying different bottle/cup ideas too.
She won't even drinkl ebm in a bottle or cup, but will have fruit juice or water
The other problem with weening her off the boob is that she is a little under weight so I have relectant to force the issue too much for fear of screwing everything up.

Health Visitors are pretty useless as not overly supportive of my breast feeding past 6 months and when I have mentioned my problems with dds weight have just been told feeding her too many vegetables.

Any ideas on how to avoid catastrophe on Wednesday night?

Alanasmum, hope you can get a second opinion on the instruction not to bf for 24 hours.....this is so rarely needed, and I am sceptical it would be needed after dental treatment, especially with a bouncing 11 mth old and not a newborn.

If you can tell us what the drugs are, maybe we can help point you in a direction for good information.

Also, see previous and recent threads about bf after am anaesthetic, which might be relevant to you.

I'm due to be sedated as I'm allergic to some anaesthetics.
I was originally told by my dentist that it would be for 72 hours but the clinic has said that 24 will be fine

Don't worry about formula milk if she doesn;t like it. As she is now 11 months try normal cows milk. If she wont take it straight water down a little and gradually each time less water.
To supplement the food/fat intake give yoghurts cheese.
If no milk at all during this time just make sure she drinks plenty of what she will have, and supplement with yoghurts and cheese etc.
Good luck.

Well......if it's sedation you are concerned about, then that's a very long-lasting one!
Normally, if you are conscious and able to function ok, then it means the sedative agent is not in your blood. And, normally, if it is not in your blood then it is not in your milk (this is not always true - but it seems to be true for sedatives. Rider: I am not a doctor or a pharmacist). You can get some good info on sedatives and breastfeeding here:

Dr Hale's site

Also, even if there is some weensy bit of sedative gets into milk the baby drinks (and reading Dr Hale, it would seem unlikely) , then this baby is 11mths.....so he becomes a tiny bit sleepier than usual? You have to ask whether this would matter terribly

Just a quick thanks. All went well turned out they used propofol, midazalam & fentenyl.
Anaesthetist was a lot nicer than the secretary and gave me a low dose so feeling ok now (6 hours) which is just as well as we've tried to give dd everything and she refusing it (even tried nesquik not sure what I was thinking think the drugs were still in system.) Will probably give in soon was adviced 12hrs but min 8
