Weaning my 6 month old. How important are the Omegas?

My dd is formula fed. I'm not in the UK.

We have a private pediatrician and one our last visit she prescribed some very expensive multivitamins. A product called Paradox oil. It is cheaper in the UK. But still quite expensive.

It's Omega 3,6 and 9 and vitamins D and E. She didn't give a specific reason as to why she just said it was a great product and she wanted all her patients dd's age on it because the science behind it is so compelling into omegas in general. I consider myself to have a balanced diet and do include them in what I eat but I'm not sure why. I can't find much online. The pediatrician made some very bold statements along the lines of protection against cancer but they sounded very far fetched.

over here they don't add any of the omegas into formula at all.

My questions are, does she need it? Will she get enough from a balanced diet? If not am I better off carrying on with the supplement or buying formula from the UK that does contain the omegas?

Fuck all that shit and do baby led weaning. Let your baby share your balanced, varied diet and she will get everything she needs.

Lots of websites on blw or get the Gill Rapely book off Amazon.

I'd be very wary of a doctor telling me to give my baby supplements with such a vague reason!

Tried the BLW approach. It didn't work for us and I'm not sure why. I know it's highly regarded on here but it really wasn't for us.

I do agree about the supplements but I did buy them to try. The fact that it's an entirely natural product did help.

The trouble is dd won't eat anything I cook for us. When I started weaning it may have been too early so I gave it a break and tried again. During this time I had visitors for a month and we had two long weekend breaks away which meant I used a few jars and packets for convenience. I know not ideal but I haven't given her anything with any nasties in. She just seems to prefer that stuff to anything I cook.

I didn't want her to lose any weight because she's doing well and I feel like we're in a good routine so I kept giving her the things she likes.

My gut would say uk formula and not the suppliment stuff. We know the standards for formula in the uk much better than loads of random products.
I bf so slightly different but I use plain old hariborange vit b, d, c and a. Tried a fancy one and it messed with dd's poo! So wary.

Thanks Squiz, she is on Aptamil and it does surprise me that the formulation is different in different countries. My mum did bring over some of the ready made stuff but dd didn't like it but I think that's different again. I will get her to bring over some of the powered stuff anyway and try that.

It does feel strange to be putting vitamins in formula though when it's supposed to have everything in it. I could understand doing it a bit more if I was bf,or when I move her to cows milk.

Sorry to hear the fancy vits messed around with your dd's poo! I was thinking that dd might have a reaction but I haven't noticed any difference in anything since I started using them so I'm going to carry on until I run out but it's just a case of deciding what to do when that happens!
