Infant feeding

Producing too much milk

I had problems for at least 9 months with producing too much milk. Baby was born on 75th centile and stayed on it - solely breastfed, but I had loads of problems. Blocked ducts were frequent, and engorgement continuous, which in turn contributed to sore nipples. Tried not to express much but sometimes needed to when waking in night, not due to baby but to 'exploding boobs'. Has only been past couple of months that better. Has anyone else encountered this and is there anything to be done to help. I know everyone says it is supply and demand, but I never found this to be true - the supply was always too great. Any thoughts from people with experience would be appreciated.

Lots and lots in the mumsnet archives on this - search on oversupply with my nick and you will find some examples.

Know what you mean ellie as i have been hitting the wall at times with the milkjets I can produce - not to mention overwhelming dd - Things were calming down but I started introducing solids a couple of weeks ago when dd turned 6m and this has meant I am getting engorged again - if dd doesn't feed during the night I get v painful build up. It happened with ds but got better as I made sure I only cut down feeds very gradually and I found a savoy cabbage leave straight from fridge into bra really helped if i was feeling particularly sore.

DD is thriving on it though as she is now officially off the scale weightwise! (has been 91plus all along so not worried)

Can't give much advice really but you are not alone!

Definitely do tiktoks search, also try looking for one sided feeding. This helped me.

You are not alone

Thanks so much. Did one side feeding all along until past couple of weeks when have dried up a bit. Am glad not to be only one. Everyone else seemed to be fine and have soft boobs again except me. I will do search. Thanks.
