Infant feeding

Reflux worries

Just had some advice from a doctor, but wondered what other MNers' experience is.

DS, 8.5 wks and breastfed, is on Infant Gaviscon for reflux, which has reduced the amount of spitting up a bit. But the last few days he's also developed a stuffy nose and occasionally does a kind of choke/gasp as if he can't breathe, before coughing and then being fine again. Also a couple of times milk has come back out of his nose. As well as this in the last few days he's started wriggling and pulling on/off the breast and crying in the middle of a feed - he does this about half of the time, the other feeds he's ok. I described all this to the doc and she said the stuffy nose may not be linked to reflux and told me to try saline nosedrops, in case this is causing the increased fussiness at the breast. If there's no change I have to take him to see them again.

The thing that panics me is hearing him choking from time to time... but she just said that was part of reflux. Have others had this problem?

Yes, this sounds really similar to what my ds has been doing. He was bf until four weeks, then went onto formula. He does not do the choking/gasping thing all the time, but off and on. Far less now than he used to (he's 17 weeks now) - although the amount of spitting up is the same.

I used to be terrifed at the milk coming out of his nose - it was so forceful, but that has settled down as well. Feeding little and often really helps him. I have never given him any Gaviscon or other medication for the reflux because he seems happy and is putting on weight etc - if he does fuss or cry a bit after throwing up, usually a dummy calms him right down (but I can understand if you wouldn't want to use one if you're bf).

Can't really say if the stuffy nose is linked to your ds' reflux though - I know my ds had it from the beginning whereas yours has only just developed it.

Have you noticed which feeds he is more settled at? Ds is always better at his bedtime and middle of the night feeds because he's more relaxed and he tends to throw up less then.

thanks weaselmum, I feel less panicky already

Yes he does seem better at night feeds - I hadn't really thought it might be because he's more relaxed but of course that could well be it.

I've been using a dummy (well, he has ) since he was 4 weeks and it does calm him down.
