Help

DS is 4mths old and bf. We always had about two / three dirty nappies a day but due to circumstances where i was away he was fed sma blue for 4 feeds one day and 3 feeds one day wk later (other feeds were EBM)
he now can go for 5/6 days without poo and then releases an almighty blockage. It doesn't seem to bother him and hv advises not to be concerned but as dd was always regular am slightly worried as worry this was due to ff. I am also considering moving to ff as due to go back to work soon and wonder if maybe different formula would work - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Hi. My DD (also 4 months) has been ff for the last 2 months due to me drying up, and I went through the same thing then. She was doing 3 poos a day and then suddenly went to one every 2 or 3 days. Apparently this is quite normal as ff does slightly constipate them, and also as they get older they take in more, so release less! she's now on a more even keel and is back to roughly 1 a day, although she varies quite a bit. So your DS sounds perfectly normal!

dunfiebabe, this is normal poo behaviour in a breastfed baby - it certainly is not constipation.

I would agree. DD switched to the bottle and now only does one atomic nappy a day. Somettimes give cooled boiled water if I think she's struggling and it's hot but otherwise seems par for the course. HAve to say that it has made using cotton nappies a whole heap easier as doesn't write off the wraps each time and the liners actually work now! My mum said I was exactly the same. Every baby's different. HAve afriend who's baby poos for England! My dd seems to have an immense store of pee instead!

Many thanks for the reassurance - we seemed to have np at all with dd now 3yrs however with ds we have been at hospital twice and he is now appears to be teething so very unhappy babba- we knew that babies are different but polar opposites we didn't expect!!! thanks again and having just found this site i wish i had found it sooner - ali i know what you mean i gave up on cloth nappies with dd however have found with ds a breeze due to lack of poo!!!

I have a similar problem to Dunfiebabe, I recently started to give my DD formula during the day and breastmilk at night and think she may be constipated. I have heard about the brown sugar and water solution, but how often do I give it to her?

Don't give the sugar solution - ignore who gave that info - perhaps an old mil?

Bf babies often go quite long between poohs as they get older. The record for my dd2 is 11 days - this is when she was exclusively bf at 5 months! What a nappy!

Have a look at the Kellymom website - honest it is normal.
