Infant feeding

When will my baby stop being sick?

Hi
DS is 6 months and has always been a sicky baby. I'm giving him some solids now, spoonfed cereal for breakfast and finger food at lunch and dinner. He still sicks A LOT. After most milk-feeds and sometimes some solid as well (especially later in the day).

Our carpets are ruined.

Does anyone know when it might stop? He's formula fed since birth (ready-made as tried the powder but I think it made him be sick more, though it's hard to tell) and I always wind him, try and keep him upright (more difficult now he wants to crawl). He's not in any discomfort, however it's very very messy and I thought it would be abating by now.

Help?

Reflux

Have u tried meds?

Really? I thought he'd find it painful/cry if it was reflux. I haven't tried meds, no, will the GP take me seriously if we've left it this long?

Is he putting on weight ok? Have you tried that special reflux milk?

Sounds similar to mine, he slowed down a bit when he was first on regular solids, (around 5 months as I started weaning at 4.5month's) then he went through another sicky stage as there was more variety in his food (around 7 months). Then gradually it settled down (he is 1yr now) he is rarely what I would call sick now but has the occasional wet burb since moving to a cup for his milk ( as he gulps it down to fast).

I have a breastfed 'happy puker'. Gaining weight, jolly and content but vomiting curdled milky sick all the time. He's only 19 weeks but I've been wondering whether this will abate soon or continue once on solids. So have nothing to add but watching with interest!

Gaining weight fine (just over 50th centile always), not tried reflux milk, maybe I should.

Sounds like reflux. If so mine grew out of it about 8 months which I think is common for milder cases.

You could get some meds from your GP. Or reduce milk and increase solids quicker (my reflux dd was not a big milk drinker and once properly started on solids, only bothered with to 1 or 2 oz a day)

Oh goodness. I feel awful if I could have done anything sooner, I thought it was normal, it's only now when I see other babies all unsicky that I really thought to ask Sad . I've been holding back on the solids for fear of making it worse, but maybe I'll try a bit more, just not tomato again... Blush

My happy puker rapidly decreased at about 10 months when he started cursing with a vengeance. Completely gone by 12 months Thank god. It was vile but he was happy in himself and pretty solid weight wise from about 3 months so j never worried

I have a sicky baby too. If they just have mild reflux and aren't bothered by it they don't need medication or special formula - I took the approach that the extra laundry/cleaning is annoying for me but DS isn't bothered so don't want to give him anything unnecessary.

Are there any other symptoms? My daughter has a problem cow's milk protein and she is sick if I have lots of milk (breastfeeding) but she also has lots of frequent, liquidy poos which caused her nappy rash. It took me ages to realise all her symptoms were related because they were quite mild.

Tangoandcreditcards · 21/08/2014 22:07

No other symptoms. I guess if it's mild, and we're 6 months in already I can wait it out. Might just ramp up the solids as he mostly holds down cereal.

I have cleaned out eBay of "giant jumbo" throws and the living room is swathed! Easier to wash than constant upholstery-dabbing!

My dd2 at 18 weeks is the same we have constant vomiting and lots of washing but she is happy and not in pain. New guidelines are not to medicate unless baby is in pain and it really is a social problem if the baby is happy.

Even reflux babies on medication are supposed to grow out of it by 1. I am hoping that solids does reduce the amount of sick we have each day.

Reading with interest too. DS is 20 weeks and sicky, he is on gaviscon which helps a little, without it he is much more sick and a bit uncomfortable in between feeds. With the gaviscon it doesn't bother him at all. I just keep clinging onto everyone saying he will grow out of it once he starts moving and is on solids.... I am just going to pretend you all said 6 months, and think about it again there.....!!!!!

I would ask for checks for allergies/intolerances. I had a baby that spewed 10 feet across a room at every feed. i could not get her onto solid food. At 18 months, we discovered that she was very allergic and had been reacting to what i had eaten and then fed to her through my milk. i couldn't get her onto solids, as she was allergic to the things i gave her. She was 4 1/2 when she finally got over her fear of eating when baby 2 was put onto solids. It was horrifically stressful and i am still astounded that i had another child!

Mine was sick until just over 1yo. (Sorry! Grin) He then later suffered really badly with constipation and would get impacted if he didn't have movicol every day so I think there were definitely some related stomach issues going on. We were fobbed off with infant gaviscon a lot at the time which didn't really help but as he got bigger it did slow down.

Both of mine were like that. One stopped at around ten months and the other around one. Both had reflux but tried meds with dd and they didn't work. Plus she didn't care a jot and was thriving so myself and the doctor decided to just let her grow out of it and she did. I feel your pain though, I found feeding them when out in cafés etc the worst, they would puke and hit the floor! I did clean it up :)

McBaby not all do. DS2's lasted until he was 3. He had a very severe case of it and as a result was very undersized (off the centiles!) so probably didn't grow out of it because he wasn't the size of a 1 year old until he was 2. Main thing is to keep them gaining weight. When they can stand and cruise they tend to stop.

Good to know I'm not alone. Good to know he will grow out if it too. Not so good to know that it might be another 6 months or more. Grin

I'm holding out hope that he's already pretty sturdy and can stand up holding on (for a few secs) that he'll cruise early and be one of those 8-month stop-pukerers. I hate taking him to other people's houses and warning everyone who holds him! (There's about a 15 min window of opportunity between feeds where you might not get sicked on). He only takes 5oz feeds so has 2 night feeds too - probably related. He ate nearly a whole Weetabix this morning - so fingers crossed!

Those still with pukers in the week-teens - I recommend the eBay giant throws - £31 and cover my whole living room floor. Smile

redhead thanks, but pretty sure it's not allergies, he holds down milky cereal (by and large) and is generally content, just messy...

Dd2 is a sicky baby. She is 10 months old and is still sick little bits even now but it has really improved in the last couple of months.

Dd1 was the same but she has allergies. Dd2 hasn't so far thank goodness.

Update.

Switched formula from C&G to Aptamil and no sick for two days. (Still first milk).

Wish I'd tried it sooner. Sad
