Infant feeding

fast let down and flow

DD is breastfed with nipple shield, she struggles on right side, ok on left. I think its due to flow on that side choking her! I don't know what to do about it though!
Let down tends to happen before I even get her latched on! The milk starts to come as soon as I put nipple shield on. Its literally running out of the end within a second. While she's feeding some is running out and soaking through the muslin I use to protect my clothes. She can't seem to cope and often pulls off coughing. This doesn't happen left side.
Is there anything I can do? I'm tempted to only feed her on left and express on right till she's bigger and can cope better. (she's 6 weeks, 1 week adjusted age). Any other advice?

Nothing useful to add except mine does this too but opposite side. I have been putting her on and off until the hind milk starts and then it seems to be ok. Bloody annoying though as I am permanently milk stained down one side. Hopefully someone useful will be along soon.

As letdown is happening before she even latches, I'd take advantage of that and catch the initial spurt with a muslin or towel. That way she won't choke and pull off spluttering. or you can express the first letdown if you want to keep it. My 16 week old is much better at coping with it now, but I used to let it jet into a sterilised bottle to be refused later

Mine is also only really on one side and she'll often refuse that side if she just wants a sleepy feed to sleep, which can be problematic if I'm engorged! Time will help though.

Also check out Kellymom for useful advice on overactive letdown reflex :)

I used to have a super fast let down (still do from time to time now and dd is 7 months old) and used to catch it in the muslin until it eventually stopped. If I failed to do this, dd would always feed too quickly and posset straight after.

Thanks ladies. Even after let down, the flow is still really fast! Even the hind milk comes quickly.
I will try just expressing first bit and see how she goes.

Check out kellymom on dealing with over supply. Try to avoid expressing as this will increase supply and letdown. But let run off in to muslin. One sides feeding and block feeding seem do help but use with caution as you don't want to reduce supply too much.

I have only fed off one side at each feed for both dds and have block fed for a day or so and got it under control by 10 weeks both times. As they get bigger they also cope with it better.

I don't remember which ones however I remember that some positions are better for fast so you could google it.

If you can manage it, try feeding her with you lying down/reclining on sofa, and her on top of you. That worked really well for me. It does get better as they get older, but it's not much fun when you're in the midst of it. Hope that helps.
