Infant feeding

When will my over supply settle?

I am exclusively breast feeding my 6 week old and we 've had a rocky time - mastitis x2 cracked nipples, thrush. I have such a fast let down he gulps and splutters, gets windy and then is unsettled despite my best attempts to wind him. My boobs are huge, heavy, leak constantly and I feel damp and sticky all the time. My 34 k nursing bra ( the largest I can find) is still really too small, my boobs are practically at my waist and none of my clothes fit. I'm living in big baggy tops that make me look even bigger. I feel so ugly and disgusting. If you have experienced something similar please can you tell me when things began to settle? I need some light at the end of the tunnel.

Jolay, this is something that is hellish while it lasts and you have it bad :(

Call any of the bf helplines. There are practical ways to make this better (eg block nursing) but do discuss them first.

It does settle down in time - hard to predict when.

Urgh, sympathies, I had terrible oversupply on DS1 and it was awful. Mine pretty much settled down around 12 weeks, but it was definitely worst in the first six weeks or so, I was constantly drenched in milk, terribly windy/spluttery baby, blocked ducts, etc. Agree with tiktok that there are things you can do in the meantime but discuss with a BF helpline first. And it will get better!

I feel like I'm saying this on every bf thread at the mo, but has he been checked for tongue tie (by an expert, not just the mw or gp)? We had similar issues to you (oversupply, spluttering, unsettled, mastitis, cracked nipples, etc) and turns out DD was tongue tied so she could neither cope with my slight oversupply nor transfer the milk effectively.

Failing that, block feeding helped a bit. (feeding leaning back never did for us as DD hated feeding in that position, I think her tt made it hard for her to latch on, or something)

Good luck! Good advice on the Kellymom website too.

No solutions for you but we're having some issues with too fast letdown and wind. My boobs are in a 36j bra and feel hot, heavy and sticky, plus all my furniture is covered in milk from when it sprays when DD (2 weeks) pulls off. So I feel some of your pain.

BTW this website sells Royce nursing bras up to an L cup and I've found royce come up quite large, might help?

I think mine settled at about 4 months.

I've recently posted about my experiences with this. Ds is now 12 weeks and things are not perfect but much better than they were. There is light...
